Oklahoma Cotton's Harvey Schroeder Reminds Producers of March 31st Deadline

The Nice Rainfall that fell across the state was a welcome sight to Cotton producers, but more will be needed as they get closer to planting season. Farm Director KC Sheperd visited with Harvey Schroeder, Executive director of the Oklahoma Cotton Council, and he said as the drought deepens, producers need to think about the opportunities to have cover, "If you've got wheat stubble rather than destroying it, you need to keep it. Schroeder said we can't make it rain, but producers can do some things to get you through until it rains. Tillage is one of the resources producers can use, and fire protection is another.
Schroeder said producers should check on what's predicted, "It may give you an idea that you need to plant less or go down on your seeding rate just a little bit to be sure, so if you do get a rain, what you have seeded will be sufficient."
With Planting season just around the corner, Schroeder says seed selection is an important detail and encourages producers to look at pests and pesticides so weeds won't rob moisture from the crop, which will generally require a spray. Schroeder said producers will also have to decide whether they are planting solid or skip-row. With Fertilizer prices so high, Schroeder thinks you will have to be prudent with what you put down, but doing more with less is something cotton farmers have always done.
March 31st is the deadline for producers to enroll their crops in the cotton trust protocol. He says if you haven't completed the process yet, you can go to trustuscotton.org, and if you need help, you can go to growers@trustuscotton.org, and the process should only take around 30 minutes. Schroeder said crop consultants can also fill out the information for you. Schroeder says it's vital for producers to enroll because producers need to know what their buyers want and how they want it, "What we're looking for is responsible, sustainable, verifiable Cotton. That's what the end-user wants. If we can do that, we will have a step up on the rest of the world."
Schroeder also reminds producers of a fun event coming up for Cotton, the 2022 Denim ball. The denim ball will take place on April 22 and 23 at the Skirvin in Oklahoma City. The deadline to reserve a room at the Denim Ball discounted rate is March 28th! To book your room, click here:
