As the 2022 Women in Agriculture Conference in Oklahoma City approaches, Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Intern, Cheyenne Leach, visits with Women in Agriculture Coordinator, Sonya McDaniel about sessions at the conference and what guest speakers will have to offer.
"We are really excited to have the conference back after a few years off due to all of the uncertainties around Covid and all of that," McDaniel said. "Our conference dates are August 4th and 5th, and our registration deadline is coming up right around the corner."
Early bird registration, McDaniel said, is July 13th. "We think it is important for women in Oklahoma, especially in the ag industry, to get together, learn together, socialize together, network and we really hope the participants leave our event feeling confident and uplifted and ready to go back to their own operations across the state," McDaniel said.
McDaniel said registration for the conference is online. "It is really easy to find if you do a quick google search for Oklahoma Women in Agriculture Conference, we should be right up at the top of the list," McDaniel said. "Once you get that site, you will see the conference brochure, and the registration link."
There are rooms blocked off for the conference at the Hilton Garden Inn, McDaniel said, and there are still plenty of rooms available for attendees.
"We really like for people to come and use us as a way to get away from everything for a while and just spend time with other women that walk your walk and talk your talk," McDaniel said. "We do have the direct link to the room block on that website as well, and then a little bit about our keynote speakers and of course, it also highlights all of our wonderful sponsors."
This year's keynote speakers, McDaniel said, are very powerful and motivational. "We are super excited to have Brooke Clay Taylor join us," McDaniel said. "Despite some setbacks and health issues, she is so excited to join and be with everyone at our conference this year, and of course, the title of her presentation is 'When life says Hold my Beer,' because sometimes you just don't know what is going to happen next and how you overcome those adversities."
Day two will feature Brandi Buzzard with her presentation about making your own luck, McDaniel said, because it is important to understand that we have the power to control and make differences in our own operations and lives.
"We also have Joni Nash," McDaniel said. "She will be opening our second day, and she will talk about the influences that women have on rural Oklahoma and how they truly have an impact within their local communities."
McDaniel said by popular demand on Day 1 is the opener for the conference, Kelli Payne.
"She is the general manager of Oklahoma National Stockyards," McDaniel said. "She is always entertaining and really understands what women in agriculture face on a daily basis. Her topic is the current trends and impacts affecting cattle markets in agriculture and she promised me that she would somehow spin that into an entertaining presentation, and I have no doubt that she will."
An area of focus this year, McDaniel said, is providing more opportunities within the conference schedule for attendees to visit and network.
"You don't have a women's conference and not expect people to stand around and visit and catch up and see people that they don't see often," McDaniel said. "We actually have built-in a full hour break the first morning of the conference and then Oklahoma Farm Bureau has stepped up and is sponsoring a late afternoon reception on day one from about 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. to give people a chance to interact more with the educational booths and the resource booths we have available as well as to just sit and talk to each other."
It is important, McDaniel, that attendees have the opportunity to make personal connections and networks so that when they go back home, they feel comfortable reaching out again.
