50 Percent or More of Cotton in Texas and Oklahoma in Poor to Very Poor Conditions

More hot, dry weather in parts of the country last week continued to put pressure on corn and soybeans, resulting in 1-percentage-point drops in the national good-to-excellent ratings for both crops, USDA NASS reported in its weekly Crop Progress on Monday. Nationwide crop conditions of corn, soybeans and cotton have not changed drastically since last week, but in Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas many commodities are showing significant drought triggered declines in quality each week.
Nationwide Corn:
Corn silking for the U.S. reached 94 percent, down 4 percentage points from last year and down 3 points from the average. Corn dough reached 62 percent, down 9 points from last year and down 3 points from the average. Corn dented reached 16 percent, down 4 percentage points from last year and the average.
Corn conditions for the 18 states reported is rated 57 percent good to excellent, 27 percent fair and 16 percent poor to very poor.
Nationwide Soybeans:
Soybeans blooming for the U.S. reached 93 percent, down 1 percentage point from last year and even with the average. Soybeans setting pods reached 74 percent, down 6 percentage points from last year and down 3 points from the average.
Soybean conditions for the 18 states reported rated 58 percent good to excellent, 30 percent fair and 12 percent poor to very poor.
Nationwide Cotton:
Cotton setting bolls for the U.S. reached 80 percent, up 7 percentage points from last year and up 2 points from the average. Cotton bolls opening reached 15 percent, up 6 percentage points from last year and up 1 point from the average.
Cotton conditions for the 15 states reported is rated 34 percent good to excellent, 31 percent fair and 35 percent poor to very poor.

Oklahoma:
Corn dough reached 54 percent, up 5 points from the previous year but down 7 points from normal. Corn dented reached 19 percent. Corn conditions rated 43 percent good to excellent, 26 percent fair and 31 percent poor to very poor. (Poor to very poor conditions have increased 10 points since last week.)
Soybeans blooming reached 65 percent, down 1 point from the previous year and from normal. Soybeans setting pods reached 32 percent, down 5 points from the previous year but up 1 point from normal. Soybean conditions rated 35 percent good to excellent, 38 percent fair and 27 percent poor to very poor. (Soybeans are showing some conditions improvements this week as last week’s conditions rated 32 percent good to excellent, 35 percent fair and 33 percent poor to very poor.)
Cotton setting bolls reached 60 percent, down 2 points from the previous year and down 7 points from normal. Cotton conditions were rated 6 percent good to excellent, 39 percent fair and 55 percent poor to very poor. (Good to excellent has increased by one point since last week, but poor to very poor conditions have increased by 8 percentage points.)
Sorghum headed reached 60 percent, down 7 points from the previous year and down 6 points from normal. Sorghum coloring reached 30 percent, up 7 points from the previous year and up 2 points from normal. Sorghum conditions rated 26 percent good to excellent, 45 percent fair and 29 percent poor to very poor.
Peanuts pegging reached 80 percent, up 9 points from the previous year and up 3 points from normal. Peanut conditions rated 76 percent good to excellent, and 24 percent fair.
Hay:
In the Central district, reporters indicated that hay harvest is providing 50% of average yield at best. The third cutting of alfalfa hay reached 85 percent, up 11 points from the previous year and up 4 points from normal. The fourth cutting of alfalfa hay reached 15 percent, down 1 point from the previous year and down 6 points from normal. The second cutting of other hay reached 75 percent, up 11 points from the previous year and up 15 points from normal. The third cutting of other hay reached 15 percent.
Pasture, Range, and Livestock:
Pasture and range conditions rated 9 percent good to excellent, 27 percent fair and 64 percent poor to very poor. Livestock conditions rated 43 percent good to excellent, 49 percent fair and 19 percent poor to very poor.
Since last week, good to excellent range and pasture conditions have dropped 9 percentage points.

Kansas:
Corn silking reached 90 percent, down 6 percentage points from last year and 7 points from the average. Corn dough reached 63 percent, down 9 percentage points from last year and 10 points from the average. Corn dented reached 25 percent, up 2 percentage points from last year and down 7 points from the average. Corn conditions rated 29 percent good to excellent, 27 percent fair and 44 percent poor to very poor. (Good to excellent conditions have decreased by 3 points since last week and poor to very poor conditions have increased by 6 points.)
Cotton setting bolls reached 92 percent, up 15 percentage points from last year and up 38 points from the average. Cotton bolls opening reached 12 percent, up 7 points from last year and up 10 points from the average. Cotton conditions rated 29 percent good to excellent, 44 percent fair and 27 percent poor to very poor. (Good to excellent conditions have decreased by 3 points since last week and poor to very poor has increased by 7 percentage points.)
Soybeans blooming reached 85 percent, up 1 point from last year and down 2 points from the average. Soybeans setting pods reached 57 percent, down 1 percentage point from last year and down 7 points from the average. Soybean conditions rated 36 percent good to excellent, 33 percent fair and 31 percent poor to very poor. (Good to excellent conditions have decreased by 5 percentage points and poor to very poor has increased by 7 points.)
Sorghum headed reached 52 percent, down 21 points from last year and down 17 points from the average. Sorghum coloring reached 9 percent, down 5 percentage points from last year and down 3 from the average. Sorghum conditions rated 27 percent good to excellent, 30 percent fair and 43 percent poor to very poor.
Pasture and range conditions:
Pasture and range conditions for Kansas rated 13 percent good to excellent, 26 percent fair and 61 percent poor to very poor.

Texas:
Corn silking reached 99 percent, up 3 percentage points from the average and equal with the average. Corn dough reached 80 percent, down 6 points from last year and down 5 points from the average. Corn conditions rated 19 percent good to excellent, 35 percent fair and 46 percent poor to very poor. (Good to excellent conditions have decreased 11 percentage points since last week and poor to very poor has increased by 8 percentage points.)
Cotton setting bolls reached 76 percent, up 10 percentage points from last year and up 3 points from the average. Cotton bolls opening reached 21 percent, up 10 percentage points from last year and up 3 points from the average. Cotton conditions rated 14 percent good to excellent, 36 percent fair and 50 percent poor to very poor. (Good to excellent conditions have decreased by 18 percent since last week.)
Peanuts pegging reached 80 percent, up 1 percentage point from last year and down 2 points from the average. Peanut conditions rated 29 percent good to excellent, 59 percent fair and 13 percent poor to very poor.
Sorghum headed reached 94 percent, up 3 percentage points from last year and up 5 points from the average. Sorghum coloring reached 74 percent, up 3 percentage points from last year and up 1 point from the average. Sorghum conditions rated 22 percent good to excellent, 34 percent fair and 44 percent poor to very poor.
Pasture and range conditions:
Pasture and range conditions for Texas rated 3 percent good to excellent, 8 percent fair and 89 percent poor to very poor. (Good to excellent rating has improved by 2 percentage points since last week.)
