38th Annual OCA Ranch Rodeo Kicks off Tonight at the Lazy E Arena

Fri, 19 Aug 2022 09:45:24 CDT

38th Annual OCA Ranch Rodeo Kicks off Tonight at the Lazy E Arena The 38th Annual OCA Ranch Rodeo kicks off tonight at the Lazy E Arena in Guthrie. Tickets are still available.

Farm Director, KC Sheperd, spoke with the chair of the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association Ranch Rodeo, Weston Givens, to talk about the upcoming event and its support for the Children’s Miracle Network.

“It’s coming up quick,” Givens said. “August 19th and 20th I believe with be our 38th annual. We are really looking forward to it. We are going to bring in 12 of the toughest ranch teams we can find in the state. These are going to be historic ranches that are scattered from all corners of the state that raise cattle for a living and ride horses for a living. They are going to be fun to watch do their thing.”

Many of the cattle that will be at the rodeo, Givens said, are raised in country that you cannot get to on a four-wheeler or in a pickup.

“You have got to get there horseback and do your business with a rope, so these fellas know how to get that done,” Givens said. “You are going to see them do things like doctor cattle, you are going to see them catch a cow that has a bad bag and milk her out, you are going to see them brand calves in a pen that doesn’t have a chute, you are going to see them get in a big pen and sort out the cattle they need to move over to the neighbor’s place, and you are going to see them do all the stuff they do at home on a daily basis.”

Givens said the primary focus of the ranch rodeo is to raise funds for the Children’s Miracle network.

“We have been involved with the Children’s Hospital for years and years now,” Givens said. “We are just so proud to work with them. We are proud of the work that they do and the research they do to help kids and find cures for diseases and help families with kids that need help.”

Just like every rancher has been in a position where he needed a hand up, Givens said there are families with sick kids that need that as well.

“We feel like we can do this event and have fun doing it and bring some of those kids out to the arena, let them be around some cowboys, raise some money, give it to them, and go let those doctors do something good with it,” Givens said. “All of us know somebody that has had a child that has had a difficult struggle. When we can give a check to an organization that is going to be financially responsible with that money and put it to good work and help someone’s kid, we don’t care whether that kid is a ranch kid or some kid off the street- we are just glad to help. It gives us a good feeling and makes us feel like we are doing something for them.”

The OCA Ranch Rodeo will be at the Lazy E Arena in Guthrie.

"We partnered with Lazy E for years now and they are a great venue for us, with a big arena, lots of space, lots of parking and well lit,” Givens said.

Givens said ticket info can be found on the Lazy E Website.

The event will have 12 tough competing teams, Givens said, and among those will be some new teams.

“There are ranch rodeos all over Oklahoma,” Givens said. “You can find a ranch rodeo probably every weekend if you want to go to one. You cannot find a ranch rodeo in Oklahoma that has the historic teams that this rodeo has and is dedicated to raising money to help kids.”

Last year the 2021 Donation was 32,000, and the total donated since 1997 is $585,500!! That deserves a big High five! To get your tickets to the event, click here:
