Oklahoma Wheat Commission Names Best of Wheat Bread Baking Champs on the Final Day of the State Fair

Oklahoma Wheat Commission Names Best of Wheat Bread Baking Champs on the Final Day of the State Fair Oklahoma bakers- young and old gathered on Sunday at the OKC Fairgrounds. For the first time since COVID, the Oklahoma Wheat Commission hosted their annual "Best of Wheat" Bread Baking Contest.


Amy Durst from Piedmont, OK in Canadian County, placed first in the Dinner Rolls Category of the Senior Division at the State “Best of Wheat” Bread Baking contest held on September 25 at the Oklahoma State Fair. Her light fluffy entry of “Grandma’s Never Fail Rolls” topped the Senior division also winning her the title of Grand Champion with her entry.


Tayler Spray from Sharon, OK in Woodward County, placed first in the Sweet Bread Category of the Junior Division at the State “Best of Wheat” Bread Baking contest. Her entry of Grandma’s Cinnamon Rolls” brought back wonderful memories of her grandma and Tayler topped the division also winning her the title of Grand Champion with her entry.


The contest is an annual event sponsored by the Oklahoma Wheat Commission and Oklahoma State Fair. “We had 118 entries from 42 counties this year, all champion or reserve champion winners in the county contests,” said David Gammill, Vice-Chairman of the Oklahoma Wheat Commission. “We had great attendance and always enjoy the opportunity to award the top bread bakers in the state.”


The contest consists of 12 classes, 6 in the senior division and 6 in the junior division. State Champions in the Senior division include: Mary Ellen Wooderson, Kay County, white bread; Katherine Ereman, Ellis County, whole wheat breads; Amy Durst, Canadian County, dinner rolls; Edwina Olson, Garfield County, other wheat breads; Jade Hardisty, Cleveland County, sweet breads and Kamie Gossen, Washita County, bread machine.


State Champions in the Junior division include: Kian Thompson, Noble County, white bread; Bristol Mealor, Bryan County, dinner rolls; Avery Fisher, Blaine County, other wheat breads; Tayler Spray, Woodward County, sweet breads; Avenlea Percell, Payne County, specialty shape breads and Ridge Spray, Woodward County, bread machine. A cookbook with the top 5 recipes of every class from the Best of Wheat competition will be available on-line January 2023 at www.okwheat.org.


The Oklahoma Wheat Commission promotes greater utilization of wheat in both domestic and international markets through research, market development and public education. Five wheat producers representing designated districts across the state serve as the Oklahoma Wheat Commission’s board of directors. Current officers are Michael Peters, Chairman, Okarche; David Gammill, Vice-Chairman, Chattanooga; Don Schieber, Secretary-Treasurer, Ponca City; R.J. Parrish, member, Hunter and Jerry Wiebe, member, Hooker.
