October Crop Production Indicates 2022 Cotton Production in Oklahoma Down 68 Percent from 2021

October Crop Production Indicates 2022 Cotton Production in Oklahoma Down 68 Percent from 2021 COTTON: Oklahoma cotton production is estimated down 68 percent from 2021.

All cotton production is forecast at 13.8 million 480-pound bales, down less than 1 percent from the previous forecast, and down 21 percent from 2021. Based on conditions as of October 1, yields are expected to average 842 pounds per harvested acre, down 1 pound from the previous forecast but up 23 pounds from 2021. Upland cotton production is forecast at 13.3 million 480-pound bales, down less than 1 percent from the previous forecast and down 22 percent from 2021. Pima cotton production is forecast at 468,000 bales, up 2 percent from the previous forecast and up 41 percent from 2021. All cotton area harvested is forecast at 7.88 million acres, unchanged from the previous forecast but down 23 percent from 2021.

Oklahoma upland cotton area harvested is forecast at 310,000 acres as of October 1, which is 30 percent less area harvested than in 2021 at 440,00 acres, and the same as last month’s estimate. As for pounds per acre, the October 1 estimate of 341 pounds per acre is down from the September 1 forecast of 387 and down about 55 percent from 2021, which was 756 pounds per acre. Oklahoma is forecast to produce 220 thousand 480-pound bales, down from last month’s estimate of 250,000 bales and down 68 percent from 2021’s production of 693,000 bales.

In Texas, USDA predicts cotton area harvested for 2022 to be 2.53 million acres, which is 55 percent less than last year’s area harvested at 5.56 million acres and the same as last month’s estimate. Yield per acre is predicted to be 654 pounds per acre, which is up from last month's estimate of 616 pounds per acre and down 1.8 percent from last’s year’s yield per acre which was 666 pounds. For 2022, the USDA predicts Texas will produce 3.4 million bales, which is up from last month’s forecast of 3.2 million bales, but 55.4 percent less than 2021 (7.7 million bales).


CORN: 2022 Production for Kansas and Texas over 20 percent lower than 2021

All Corn production for grain is forecast at 13.9 billion bushels, down less than 1 percent from the previous forecast and down 8 percent from 2021. Based on conditions as of October 1, yields are expected to average 171.9 bushels per harvested acre, down 0.6 bushel from the previous forecast and down 4.8 bushels from last year. After a thorough review of all available data, acreage estimates are unchanged from last month. Total planted area, at 88.6 million acres, is unchanged from the previous estimate but down 5 percent from the previous year. Area harvested for grain, forecast at 80.8 million acres, is unchanged from the previous forecast but down 5 percent from the previous year.

Oklahoma corn harvested for grain is forecast at 305,000 acres, which is unchanged from last month and 3.2 percent more than 2021 at 295,000. In 2021, Oklahoma averaged 150 bushels per acre. As of October 1, USDA estimates Oklahoma to yield 125 bushels per acre, up from the September forecast of 120 bushels per acre. Total corn production for Oklahoma is forecasted to be 38.1 million bushels, which is down from the September estimate of 36.6 million bushels and 13.8 percent lower than the 2021 corn production of 44.2 million bushels.

Over in Texas, the USDA predicts corn harvested for grain to be at 1.78 million acres, unchanged from last month and 4 percent less than in 2021 at 1.8 million acres. As of October 1, Texas if forecasted to yield 100 bushels per acre- 4 bushels per acre less than the September forecast and 21.8 percent lower than the 2021 yield of 128 bushels per acre. Corn production for Texas is estimated to be 178 million bushels, which is less than the September estimate of 185 million bushels and 24.8 percent less than in 2022 at 236.8 million bushels.

In Kansas, the USDA predicts 5.15 million acres of corn to be harvested for grain, which is unchanged from last month and is about 5 percent less than 2021 at 5.4 million acres. As of October 1, Kansas is forecast to yield 115 bushels per acre, down from the September forecast of 122 bushels per acre and down 17 percent from 2021 at 139 bushels per acre. Lastly, for 2022, Kansas is forecasted to produce 592.25 million bushels of corn, which is down from last month’s estimate of 628.3 million bushels and 21 percent less than in 2021 at 750.6 million bushels.


SOYBEANS: Soybean Production in South Plains Estimated Lower in 2022

Soybean production for beans is forecast at 4.31 billion bushels, down 1 percent from the previous forecast and down 3 percent from 2021. Based on conditions as of October 1, yields are expected to average 49.8 bushels per acre, down 0.7 bushel from the previous forecast and down 1.9 bushels from 2021. After a thorough review of all available data, acreage estimates are unchanged from last month. The total planted area, at 87.5 million acres, is unchanged from the previous estimate but up less than 1 percent from the previous year. The area harvested for beans in the United States is forecast at 86.6 million acres, unchanged from the previous forecast but up less than 1 percent from 2021.

In Oklahoma, the soybean area harvested is forecast at 525,000 acres, down 1.8 percent from the 2021 acres harvested of 535,000. Yield per acre is forecasted at 16 bushels per acre, unchanged from the September estimates, but down 30 percent from 2021, which was 23 bushels per acre. USDA estimates soybean production in Oklahoma will yield 8.4 million bushels, down 31.7 percent from 2021’s production of 12.3 million bushels.

Over in Texas, the soybean area harvested is forecast at 140,000 acres, which is up from 2021’s harvested acreage of 100,000 acres. Yield per acre is forecasted at 33 bushels per acre as of October 1, which is up from the September estimates of 28 bushels per acre. USDA estimated soybean production in Texas will yield 74.5 million bushels, down 2 percent from 2021’s production of 76 million bushels.

In Kansas, the soybean area harvested is forecast at 5 million acres, up from 2021’s 4.8 million harvested acres. Yield per acre is forecasted at 28 bushels per acre as of October 1, down from the September estimate of 32 bushels per acre, and down 30 percent from the 2021 yield of 40 bushels per acre. USDA estimates soybean production in Kansas will yield 140 million bushels, which is down from 27 percent from the 2021 soybean production of 192 million bushels.
