From the Cattle Industry Convention- Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays talked with Cattlefax CEO Randy Blach on the day after the annual Cattlefax Outlook Seminar. And, Ron and Randy talked about a variety of the issues raised by the Cattlefax team on Thursday.
Blach said that 2015 provided a wild ride in the markets for cattle producers- with the first half of the year, fed cattle saw an average price of $160 and the second half of the year that average fed cattle price dropped to $135 per hundredweight. Blach said that the bottom line for 2015 was the reality of having to absorb four and half billion pounds of protein than we had in 2014- the single largest one year change in the history of our business.
Hays and Blach talked about several issues, including the current size of the US Beef Cow herd, what the eventual size of the Herd should be, the limited number of cash cattle in the southern plains and how that impacts price discovery and advice to producers as they navigate 2016.
