CAB: 1 in 5 Fed Cattle in North America Hit Certified Angus Specs Thanks to Producers' Commitment to Quality
Mon, 15 Apr 2019 05:02:44 CDT
Arguably, Certified Angus Beef is the most recognizable beef brand out there. One of those that's had a part to play in the brand's success is Mark McCully, vice president of production. In a recent interview, he told Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays, the success story has been one in the making from a lot of different directions - including cattle producers who have stepped up and raised the right kind of cattle. According to him, "it's been a fun ride."
"It really has been a fun story to tell. I think we've seen tremendous growth in the brand over it's 40, going on 41-year history and ultimately - it's because of cattlemen responding to consumer demands," McCully said. "We've put a way better higher-quality beef product out in front of our consumer as a whole and beef cattlemen have just done such a great job of elevating the quality level and the ultimate experience of their end product."
McCully makes no bones about the fact that consumer demand has been largely responsible for the growth the brand has seen. That demand for high-quality beef and producers' intentional focus on improving their product, specifically marbling, has led to a remarkable shift in the overall quality of the beef that is available in today's marketplace - with more premium grade and prime cuts available than ever before. McCully says in just the last two years, more cattle are graded high choice and prime and qualifying for the CAB brand than there are cattle being stamped USDA Select.
"Cattlemen have been at this for a while and it's really manifesting itself out there in the marketplace. If we look back at just the last ten years, we've doubled the number of cattle that are qualifying into our brand from 2.5 million head- we'll do over 6 million head into our Certified Angus Beef brand today," he said. "That represents about 1 in 5 fed cattle in North America today. It's a major driver and contributes to overall cattle prices and just the overall demand we have today."
