Fake Meat Pushers Getting Bolder, More Aggressive - NCBA's Dannielle Beck Pushes Back on Their Claims
Wed, 24 Jul 2019 10:20:49 CDT
Danielle Beck is with the National Cattlemen's Beef Association's DC office. She recently visited the Sooner State to attend the Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association's 2019 Convention and Tradeshow held this past week in Norman. During her visit, she took a moment to speak with Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays to discuss the issue of 'fake meat' which she says the beef industry is watching very closely.
"Across the board - be it lab-grown or plant-based - our interest in fake meat is making sure we are allowed to compete on a fair, even playing field," Beck said. "Making sure the laws that govern these products ensure the purveyors are held to the exact same standards - be it either safety or labelling. That's really important to our organization."
According to Beck, the companies behind these alternative meat products have become increasingly aggressive in the meat space of the marketplace. Plant-based products have evolved over time with the advancement of food technology. No longer are these products being marketed to just vegetarians, she says, but meat-eating consumers have now become a primary target of marketing that is often disparaging of conventionally produced meat products and their overall quality. This rising aggression has underscored the importance of ensuring that these companies are compelled to adhere to the same regulatory parameters the beef industry is held to - again to ensure a level playing field for all parties.
"The CEO of Impossible Foods has said he wants to put an end to animal agriculture by 2035. That's a pretty bold statement.," Beck pointed out. "Everybody else across the globe is watching us and waiting to see what happens here and so it's critically important that we get this right."
