Dr. Rosslyn Biggs Beef Buzzes About Vesicular Stomatitis with Ron Hays

Vesicular Stomatitis is continuing to spread. As of last Friday there have been 851 affected premises in the states of Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Oklahoma, and Nebraska. 554 premises have been released from quarantine so that means 297 are still active. Colorado, Texas, New Mexico, Utah, Nebraska, and Wyoming have found new cases in the last week.
The quarantine of the premises in Oklahoma in Tillman County in a horse has been released as two weeks passed with no other animals becoming symptomatic.
Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays sat down with OSU Beef Cattle Extension Specialist and Veterinarian Dr. Rosslyn Biggs to talk about VSV- and her concerns about the disease are featured in today's Beef Buzz.
Dr. Biggs says that this is a disease that has been found most often in horses, but beef cattle also can "catch" the virus and spread it as well. The symptoms of Vesicular Stomatitis are very similar to FMD, Foot and Mouth Disease, and that makes it a disease that everyone in animal agriculture needs to be very aware of.
Dr. Biggs says that if your county comes up with a case of VSV, that will mean extra work for any livestock producer wanting to move horses or cattle. Oklahoma State rules say "Livestock or horses traveling from a County that has had VSV diagnosed within the past 30 days (30) days or a county that contains a premises quarantined for vesicular stomatitis shall be accompanied by a certificate of veterinary inspection dated within five (5) days of entry containing the following statement: "All animals identified on this certificate of veterinary inspection have been examined and found to be free from signs of vesicular stomatitis and have not originated from a premise which is under quarantine for vesicular stomatitis."
