National FFA Advisor Steve Brown Says FFA Must Address Technology's Growing Role in Agriculture

National FFA Advisor Steve Brown Says FFA Must Address Technology's Growing Role in Agriculture This year's National FFA Convention seems to be another resounding success, on pace to perhaps have yet another record-breaking attendance, according to National FFA Advisor Steve Brown. He took a few moments to speak with Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays, who is on location in Indianapolis this week, covering the event. You can listen to their entire conversation by clicking or tapping the LISTEN BAR below.

"We're having a great convention," Brown said. "Using the 'I Can, We Will' theme has really inspired members and fits the climate of the students."

Brown says that currently, FFA's membership base is growing with more than an additional 4,000 members on the roles nationally compared to last year. Although, he says the organization is still struggling a bit with a teacher shortage.

"As we have the demand for new programs and new teachers, it's challenging us, but we're working very hard and trying to solve that situation."

Times are changing, though, and Brown says on behalf of himself and the board, that the organization is recognizing a shift taking place in the agricultural industry - that's becoming more reliant on advanced technologies. He said there is a growing interest in looking at ways to evolve the FFA and its programs to better equip members with the skills and knowledge they will need to meet future demand in the industry for qualified talent.

"If you look at the agricultural industry, the amount of technology, drones, GPS systems - those type of things that are out there- We're going to have to adapt our CDEs (career development events) to match those systems as well as a skill level those students need."

Brown says the agriculture industry has always looked to the FFA as a reliable partner in preparing and delivering the next generation of leaders to ensure future success and sustainability. In nearly 100 years of existence, Brown says nothing has changed.
