2016 Oklahoma Star in Agri Science- Braden Kellogg of the Oologah FFA

Oologah FFA member Braden Kellogg grew up on a ranch and has been around agriculture his entire life, but he discovered his passion for the agricultural industry his eighth-grade year when he joined FFA.
Kellogg's devotion to scientific investigation led to his selection as the 2016 State Star in Agriscience. His supervised agricultural experience was rated the best agriscience program among the 836 FFA members who received the State FFA Degree during the 90th Oklahoma State FFA Convention in Oklahoma City on April 27.

Kellogg conducted research on what makes students active in FFA. He paid special attention to the eighth grade program because that is when he became involved in FFA. Kellogg contacted agricultural instructors and FFA advisers asking for their students' participation in his research, he said. "I was thrilled with my results and communicated the results with any Ag teacher that would listen," Kellogg said. "I was hoping I could make a different in student involvement."
Kellogg competed in the Agriscience Fair at the state level, which he won before placing ninth at the national level.
During Kellogg's junior year, he conducted research with welding by comparing the strengths of various metals. He competed at the state level where he placed third with his project.
Kellogg's most recent project included conducting research on whether people could really "Taste the Difference" between Angus beef and other beef. "I contacted the Certified Angus brand first," Kellogg said. "I then went on to contact Professor Gretchen Mafi at Oklahoma State University. I continued my research until I felt the results were accurate."
Kellogg said the Agriscience Fair was an unforgettable experience, and he has acquired skills that will help him with his future endeavors.
The 17-year-old Oologah FFA member is the son of Brian and Cynthia Kellogg. His agricultural education instructors and FFA advisers are Kadie Smith and Sammy Leonard.
Along with the State Star honor, Kellogg also received the Governor's Trophy and a $1,500 cash award, which is sponsored on the state level by The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation. The national sponsor for this award is CNH Industrial Capital and Dupont Co.
