Meet Your 2017 National Proficiency Award Winner in Beef Production- Lane Fanning of Laverne FFA

Fri, 27 Oct 2017 15:46:35 CDT

Meet Your 2017 National Proficiency Award Winner in Beef Production- Lane Fanning of Laverne FFA The Agricultural Proficiency Awards honor FFA members who, through their Supervised Agricultural Experiences have developed specialized skills that they can apply toward their future careers. Students can compete for awards in 47 areas covering everything from Agricultural Communications to Wildlife Management. Each award area has two categories, placement and entrepreneurship- although in some award area- those two categories are combined.

Placement proficiency awards are given to those whose SAEs are related to employment, apprenticeships, or internships at an agribusiness or agriculture-related organization. Entrepreneurship proficiency awards are given to those whose SAEs are related to ownership of an agribusiness or agriculture-related organization. Proficiency awards are given out at the local, state and national levels.

Here in 2017, Oklahoma had 23 finalists vying for national honors in the Proficiency categories- and two of them were named national champions on Friday afternoon at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis at the 90th National Convention of the FFA.

The winner of the Beef Production- Entrepreneurship Proficiency is Lane Fanning of the Laverne FFA Chapter.

Fanning has a labor exchange agreement with his parents, allowing him to use facilities, machinery, and equipment. This agreement has allowed him to grow a herd of 230 stocker cattle and maintain 169 acres of grassland. Responsible for the purchase, health, care and feeding of his stocker cattle, he had approximately 500 cattle in his herd in 2014. Lane has completed the Master of Beef Advocacy program through the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, allowing him to tell the story of his beef production experience and promote beef in a positive way.

Lane and Ron talked about the uniqueness of winter wheat pasture compared to other parts of the country and how he had to explain how wheat is a good pasture for light weight cattle in the southern plains.

He is supported by his parents, Michele and Tom, and his FFA advisors Sandi Kolbe and Jim Culp.

Fanning has already had a great 2017, having been named the Star Farmer of Oklahoma at the State Convention in May.

Lane described his business and involvement in the beef cattle business to Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays just moments after he heard his name called on stage on Friday afternoon- and you can hear their conversation by clicking on the LISTEN BAR below.
