Meet Your 2017 National Proficiency Award Winner in Beef Production- Luke Muller of the Navajo FFA

The Agricultural Proficiency Awards honor FFA members who, through their Supervised Agricultural Experiences have developed specialized skills that they can apply toward their future careers. Students can compete for awards in 47 areas covering everything from Agricultural Communications to Wildlife Management. Each award area has two categories, placement and entrepreneurship- although in some award area- those two categories are combined.
Placement proficiency awards are given to those whose SAEs are related to employment, apprenticeships, or internships at an agribusiness or agriculture-related organization. Entrepreneurship proficiency awards are given to those whose SAEs are related to ownership of an agribusiness or agriculture-related organization. Proficiency awards are given out at the local, state and national levels.
Here in 2017, Oklahoma had 23 finalists vying for national honors in the Proficiency categories- and two of them were named national champions on Friday afternoon at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis at the 90th National Convention of the FFA.
The winner of the Fiber and/or Oil Crop Production - Entrepreneurship/Placement is Luke Muller of the Navajo FFA Chapter.
Muller grew up in the cotton furrows, learning every aspect of the operation. He's been tasked with irrigating, chopping weeds and helping his father scout for pests. Luke was a part of the decision to add 300 hundred acres of winter canola as a rotational crop with winter wheat- adding an oil seed to their farm operation. Starting out on a crew, he is now put in charge of a three to five-man crew.
He is attending Oklahoma State University and majoring in plant and soil science.
He is supported by his parents, Kellie and Matt, and his FFA advisor, Scott McCombs.
This Proficiency Award is a family affair, as his dad Matt won this same award his first year out of high school- his Award was presented in Kansas City.
