The Agricultural Proficiency Awards honor FFA members who, through their Supervised Agricultural Experiences have developed specialized skills that they can apply toward their future careers. Students can compete for awards in 47 areas covering everything from Agricultural Communications to Wildlife Management. Each award area has two categories, placement and entrepreneurship- although in some award area- those two categories are combined.
Placement proficiency awards are given to those whose SAEs are related to employment, apprenticeships, or internships at an agribusiness or agriculture-related organization. Entrepreneurship proficiency awards are given to those whose SAEs are related to ownership of an agribusiness or agriculture-related organization. Proficiency awards are given out at the local, state and national levels.
Here in 2016, Oklahoma had 17 finalists vying for national honors in the Proficiency categories- and three of them were named national champions on Friday afternoon at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis at the 89th National Convention of the FFA.
Winning the 2016 National Proficiency Award in Ag Communications was Bethany Niles of the Fairview FFA Chapter. Bethany admits that her communication skills weren't outstanding before joining FFA. But then she was elected chapter reporter and began " Doing to Learn." She has maintained her chapter's website, social media accounts and scrapbook. She has also made presentations at the local Lion's Club and had the opportunity to promote her agriscience program on a regional radio station.
In talking with Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays, she also described her role in JacketTime TV, which is a YouTube TV channel developed by the Fairview FFA. She has spent hours of production time on the broadcasts- and says it has been a great learning experience. You can hear her conversation with Hays by clicking on the LISTEN BAR below.
Niles is supported by her parents, Nancy and Sid, and her FFA advisors, Jerrod Lundry and Vince McGolden.
