Mon, 22 Oct 2012 20:08:43 CDT
Garrett Yerigan of the Pryor, Oklahoma, FFA Chapter has been traveling the rodeo circuit all his life and has become enamored with the role of the announcer. With this passion, he began Lightning G Announcing & Sound, his own business offering his announcing services to rodeos and other agricultural shows. In addition to working on his communication skills as an announcer, he's also developed marketing strategies, ensuring that his business gains new customers throughout North America.
As such, Yerigan is one of about 20 different Oklahoma FFA members who are finalists in the Proficiency Award categories. Yerrigan is in Indianapolis this week and will be competing as one of the top four finalists in the entrepreneurship/placement category of agricultural communications. Yerigan spoke with Radio Oklahoma Network Farm Director Ron Hays about his career.
"Ag communications is something that has been very second nature for me. As a rodeo announcer, obviously, you are communicating with thousands of people at a time. Rodeo is a very agricultural sport. It was founded on the basis of cowboy skills on a ranch. Being able to communicate with an agricultural sport is something I'm very proud to do."
Yerigan said the FFA has been instrumental in building his public speaking skills. He also credits the building of his record book as being important in keeping track of his finances.
Yerigan is supported by his parents Kathy and Dale and his FFA advisors Walt Taylor and Jerrod Melugin.
