Tanner Allread of Union City Advances in National Prepared Public Speaking ContestWed, 24 Oct 2012 10:01:12 CDT
In the National Speech contests held annually at the National Convention of the FFA, it's all about speaking with confidence, answering your questions well and then hoping to see your name highlighted on the list, which means you have advanced to the next round. That has happened for the first of the Oklahoma state winners of the three major speech contests- in this case the Prepared Public Speaking contest. Tanner Allread of Union City FFA spoke against five other contestants in the first round of this year's Prepared Public Speaking contest- and he and the speaker from California advanced out of his room.
This sets Tanner up to present his speech again to a different set of judges later today, hoping his presentation and ability to handle questions will move him forward a second time- this time to the National Prepared Speech Final Four on Thursday here at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis.
Allread chose for his speech topic the 2012 Farm Bill, which has proven to be a topic that continually revises itself as new developments unfold. Tanner told Farm Director Ron Hays that his speech has been updated multiple times- and that it continues to be a work in progress as Congress waits on the arrival of the Lame Duck session before floor action might occur in the US House.
Ron Hays talked with Tanner after this first round win- and in preparation for the second round- he quizzed Tanner about several aspects of the 2012 bill. It was hopefully good practice for Tanner- and would be worth your time to listen to- as he offers some thoughtful insights into the development of the 2012 farm bill.
