Your '18 National Proficiency Award Winner in Sheep Production-JaLeigh Oldenburg, Mulhall-Orlando

Your '18 National Proficiency Award Winner in Sheep Production-JaLeigh Oldenburg, Mulhall-Orlando The Agricultural Proficiency Awards honor FFA members who, through their Supervised Agricultural Experiences have developed specialized skills that they can apply toward their future careers. Students can compete for awards in 47 areas covering everything from Agricultural Communications to Wildlife Management. Each award area has two categories, placement and entrepreneurship- although in some award area- those two categories are combined.

Placement proficiency awards are given to those whose SAEs are related to employment, apprenticeships, or internships at an agribusiness or agriculture-related organization. Entrepreneurship proficiency awards are given to those whose SAEs are related to ownership of an agribusiness or agriculture-related organization. Proficiency awards are given out at the local, state and national levels.

Here in 2018, Oklahoma had 21 finalists vying for national honors in the Proficiency categories- and four of them were named national champions on Friday afternoon at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis at the 91st National Convention of the FFA. The four winners placed Oklahoma third on a state basis- behind Georgia and Ohio.

The winner of the 2018 Sheep Production Entrepreneurship/Placement category was JaLeigh Oldenburg of the Mulhall- Orlando FFA Chapter.

JaLeigh began her supervised agricultural experience when she was five years and her father gave her ten ewes. These ewes became the genetic nucleus of her stock as a Southdown breeder. She focuses on producing complete sheep with plenty of muscle and structural correctness. Oldenburg plans to obtain a degree in animal science while growing her own sheep flock.

She is supported by her FFA advisor, Cody Johnson.

Moments after hearing his name called on the FFA Convention stage, Oldenburg talked with Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays about her program that led to this national championship.
