The 2008 Star Farmer of America calls Garber, Oklahoma home- as Travis Schnaithman heard his name called on stage at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on Saturday morning at the 81st National Convention of the FFA Organization. The picture here was taken during a Saturday morning photo shot for the four national Stars, and you have from left to right- Derek Lowrey of Missouri, Star in Ag Placement; Laura Bruner of Ohio, Star in AgriScience; Travis Schnaithman of Oklahoma, Star Farmer and Jason Hanstedt ofWisonsin, Star Agribusinessman.
Schnaithman, who attends Oklahoma State University, intends to return to the family farm and be a fifth generation farmer in Garfield County. He was the Oklahoma Star Farmer in 2005, Oklahoma State FFA President in 2007 and caps off his FFA career as Star Farmer of America.
Schnaithman began his FFA career in 2000 while he was an eighth-grader. He started planning for his farm and soon realized the potential. He soon added more equipment to his operation and diversified his livestock. He began to custom swath and bale hay and also raised natural club lamb prospects. Soon he was also implementing artificial insemination (AI) in his cow herds. In 2004, he decided to enhance his AI skills and attend the Reproduction Enterprises A.I. School. As a result, he’s had success with his conception rates. Along with adding A.I. into his production, Schnaithman was able to add an additional 480 acres of land, and in 2007, added an additional 640 acres of land.
We grabbed some quick reactions with Travis on video after his being named- and then we also sat down and talked more in depth with him at the same time in an audio interview.
