Okla. State FFA President Ridge Hughbanks Shares What the Blue and Gold Jacket Means to Him

Thu, 19 Oct 2017 15:23:26 CDT

Okla. State FFA President Ridge Hughbanks Shares What the Blue and Gold Jacket Means to Him As the 2017 National FFA Convention approaches this month, Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays invited Ridge Hughbanks, Oklahoma State FFA president, to join him in studio to talk about his experience as a state officer and what he is looking forward to most about attending the national convention this coming week. You can listen to their complete conversation by clicking or tapping the LISTEN BAR below at the bottom of the page.

"Honestly, it's been surprisingly everything I could have ever expected it to be," Hughbanks said, reflecting on his time as state president. "But man," he said. "You blink and you're already half way through your first semester of college. Looking back on the things we've done thus far, I think we're headed in a very good direction for most of the goals we have set for this year."

But, he admits there is always room for improvement. He says having had the previous experience of serving as a state officer prior to becoming president taught him that.

"Having that year under your belt - it certainly helps. I feel a lot more prepared," Hughbanks confided. "It's being able to say I've lived through a year of it. Here's how things can be better; here's how they were already good; how can we build on that. And, a lot of it is just having that experience to be able to guide the other officers on the team and say this what we need to do, this is how we need to do it."

His leadership experience isn't only helping him to orchestrate the work of the Oklahoma FFA Association, it has also prepared him to take on even loftier tasks that he will see come to fruition in Indianapolis at the National FFA Convention. Earlier this year, Hughbanks attended the FFA State Presidents Conference, where he was elected to serve as one of six committee chairmen, overseeing the Chapter Opportunities and Opportunities for Chapter Members working committee. Since then, he has been working to get organized to meet again with his committee at the convention.

"We are reevaluating the different conferences that exist," he explained, "and maybe even be putting together new opportunities for those members that maybe don't have as many on the Chapter level."

These types of opportunities for personal and professional growth, are something Hughbanks said would not have been possible without the FFA and his initial decision to get involved. He believes in the value FFA and agricultural education programs bring back to states' public education systems. Hughbanks says he, like so many other students, has benefited from all that FFA has to offer today's youth.

"It means the world to me because it's given me confidence in myself and has basically led me to where I am today," Hughbanks remarked. "More than just FFA, but all the other facets of my life where I've also found some success."

You can find out more about Hughbanks' FFA experiences and what his career in the organization has meant to him, by clicking or tapping the LISTEN BAR below. You can also catch him this Saturday on KWTV-News9 in the Oklahoma City area at 6:40 a.m. where he will be featured on our 'In the Field' segment as Ron Hays' guest.
