Meet Ashton Hawkins, Your Central District Star in Production Agriculture of the Lindsay FFA Chapter

Tue, 25 Apr 2017 11:52:44 CDT

Meet Ashton Hawkins, Your Central District Star in Production Agriculture of the Lindsay FFA Chapter During the month of April, the Radio Oklahoma Ag Network and Oklahoma Farm Report is spotlighting the twenty District Stars of Oklahoma FFA that are among the highest achievers in the organization. The stars come from the five districts in four categories- Star in Ag Placement, Star in Agriscience, Star in Agribusiness and Star in Production Agriculture. Last week, we spotlighted the five district stars in Agribusiness- this week we move on to the Production Agriculture Stars for 2017.

Today, we highlight Ashton Hawkins of the Lindsay FFA Chapter, representing the Central District as its Star in Production Agriculture.

"I started as a sophomore in high school starting off with production cattle and have transitioned into show cattle," she said. "I've grown up in a very ag-related family and I've been involved my whole life with Angus cows and watching my family raise them and it was a passion that was passed on to me and I love doing it."

Hawkins insists that in order to be successful in production agriculture, you have to pay attention to the environmental elements and conditions of the business around you, and she says they change every day. In addition to learning life lessons like this, she's also learned many practical skills as well.

"I have learned how to artificially inseminate cattle and how to use the knowledge of embryos and different things like that," Hawkins said, adding that it has helped her produce the kind of cattle she wants for her operation. "I've been able to pinpoint exactly what every single cow needs and have access to anything I want in my herd."

Hawkins is very active in her chapter, serving last year as the Chapter Reporter and enjoys judging livestock as well as showing cattle and pigs. Upon graduation, she has plans to attend Redlands Community College to pursue a degree in animal science with aspirations to get involved in the animal reproduction business.
