During the month of April, the Radio Oklahoma Ag Network and Oklahoma Farm Report is spotlighting the twenty Area Stars of Oklahoma FFA that are among the highest achievers in the organization. The stars come from the five areas in four categories- Star in Ag Placement, Star in Agriscience, Star in Agribusiness and Star in Production Agriculture. This week, we are spotlighting the five area stars in Ag Placement, who will compete for the State Star Award in Ag Placement during the Oklahoma State FFA Convention coming up May 1-2, 2018 in Oklahoma City.
Our coverage continues today with the Northeast Area Star in Agriculture Placement, Wyatt Hancock of the Oologah FFA Chapter. Wyatt says his involvement in the FFA helped him in his occupational experience with the local non-profit organization Tenaciously Teal in honing his leadership skills and service to others in his community. He explained what giving his time and energy to this cause means to him.
"The woman who started it had ovarian cancer and she realized as she was going through chemotherapy that there were other cancer patients who didn't have the support that she did," he said. "So, she set out to make everyone feel like they had support. She started giving out care packages, which consist of granola bars, Gator-Aid, Kleenex- stuff she felt was a daily need going through chemo."
After witnessing his grandmother, two close family friends and a fellow classmate pass away from cancer-related illness, Wyatt made his mind up to get involved with Tenacious Teal and soon began hosting his own care packaging parties, inviting other volunteers to come together and assemble care packages to be distributed to local cancer patients.
Through the FFA and his involvement in showing heifers, public speaking, livestock evaluation and serving as a chapter officer for three years running, Wyatt says he was able to understand the value of hard work and serving a purpose greater than one's own self. After graduation, he hopes to attend Oklahoma State University and pursue a double major in Agribusiness and Pre-Law.
