Introducing Your 2018 Star in Ag Production, Rhett Taylor of the Okemah FFA Chapter

Mon, 23 Apr 2018 18:28:39 CDT

Introducing Your 2018 Star in Ag Production, Rhett Taylor of the Okemah FFA Chapter During the month of April, the Radio Oklahoma Ag Network and Oklahoma Farm Report is spotlighting the twenty Area Stars of Oklahoma FFA that are among the highest achievers in the organization. The stars come from the five areas in four categories- Star in Ag Placement, Star in Agriscience, Star in Agribusiness and Star in Production Agriculture. This week, we are spotlighting the five area stars in Ag Production, who will compete for the State Star Award in Ag Production during the Oklahoma State FFA Convention coming up May 1-2, 2018 in Oklahoma City.

We begin this week with your Northeast Area Star in Ag Production, Rhett Taylor of the Okemah FFA Chapter. Rhett's supervised agricultural experience, or SAE, revolves around breeding swine production - a business he started with his brother in 2008 at just 9 years old. Since then, the Rhett has taken over the business himself, growing it to include now 10 purebred sows. His operation is diversified with a variety of breeds, but in recent years, Rhett has concentrated on building up his Hereford production. Rhett says Herefords have always been a favorite of his and has managed to be successful in his business with the foresight of seeing the breed's popularity grow. He has taken advantage of that rising affinity for the breed and capitalized on it.

"The breed has just really grown on people and is now getting really popular at the Oklahoma Youth Expo and Tulsa State Fair," he said. "I've been very fortunate to do really well exhibiting show pigs as well as breeding my own."

When it comes to be successful in business, Rhett says it is all about putting in a lot of hard work and keeping a positive mindset, one of determination to keep moving forward and always seeking improvement. He has worked over time to find what marketing strategies work best for him, which he says include both live and online sales where his hogs can be prominently featured. Most importantly, though, Rhett says his success is rooted in his long-term vision for himself, setting goals he hoped to achieve from his first year as a member of the FFA. Those goals included being chapter president and Northeast Area Star Farmer. Today, he has accomplished both. Obviously, Rhett has worked very hard for the recognition he has earned, but humbly says it would all have been impossible without the help of others.

"What got me here today is all the people back home, pushing me to keep doing my SAE project and to keep it growing," he said.

After graduation, Rhett plans to attend Connors State College with hopes of joining the livestock judging team. He intends to seek a degree in Agribusiness and Animal Science with plans to finish out those degrees at Oklahoma State University.
