Introducing Garrett Kline of the Chandler FFA Chapter, Your 2018 FFA Central Area Star Farmer

Fri, 27 Apr 2018 11:08:15 CDT

Introducing Garrett Kline of the Chandler FFA Chapter, Your 2018 FFA Central Area Star Farmer During the month of April, the Radio Oklahoma Ag Network and Oklahoma Farm Report is spotlighting the twenty Area Stars of Oklahoma FFA that are among the highest achievers in the organization. The stars come from the five areas in four categories- Star in Ag Placement, Star in Agriscience, Star in Agribusiness and Star in Production Agriculture. This week, we are spotlighting the five area stars in Agricultural Production, who will compete for the State Star Farmer Award during the Oklahoma State FFA Convention coming up May 1-2, 2018 in Oklahoma City.

We end this week and our coverage of the 2018 Area Star Finalists with your Central Area Star Farmer, Garrett Kline of the Chandler FFA Chapter. Kline currently runs a flock of 42 head of club lamb producing ewes and three rams, which he has built up since the 7th grade when he started out with just eight ewes. Kline has had success at the state level with his flock. Most recently, he had a class winner and third overall in the Hampshire breed at the Oklahoma Youth Expo. Over the years, Kline has learned what it takes to be successful in the club lamb business.

"In my personal opinion, you've got to study the genetics and how they match up per the ream and ewe," he said. "If the genetics don't match up, then your ewes aren't going to feed out to their full potential. I think that's the biggest thing - to be able to judge the sheep and be able to pick what you need in the show lamb industry."

From his experience, the first few hours of a lamb's life is the most critical. During lambing season, Kline stays close to his ewes to assist when needed and ensures that once the lambs are born, they get that essential first bit of milk and gets them up and around to have the best chance at survival and a good start to a healthy, productive life. He attributes much of his practical knowledge on the farm and in the barn with the curriculum he has been taught in the ag classroom and through his involvement in the FFA.

"FFA has really helped me just through the agriculture classes, learning the science of how everything works," he said. "I've been able to put that to use in my flock."

After graduation, Kline plans to attend Southwestern Oklahoma State University to pursue a degree in either business finance and/or accounting.
