At the 2018 National FFA Convention in Indianapolis - Oklahoma continues the tradition of placing finalists into the Star Competition. Oklahoma has two Star Finalists for 2018. One of them is a National Star Finalist in Agriscience - Adrienne Blakey of the Stillwater FFA Chapter, who sat down with Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays to talk about her Agriscience project before hitting the road to Indianapolis this week. You can listen to their complete conversation by clicking or tapping the LISTEN BAR below at the bottom of the page.
"I started my Agriscience research SAE when I came to Oklahoma State University and got plugged in with undergraduate research. I've been a part of a couple different interrelated studies all focusing on answering the question of whether of not there's a connection between modern wheat breeding and the rise in gluten sensitivity that we've seen the past couple of decades."
Blakey has taken the position in her study that the issue holds enough merit to warrant the additional research to go back and consider if there is any chance of a correlation and to ensure the OSU's Wheat Breeding Team is churning out the safest, highest quality product it can for consumption. Early results of that research has been encouraging that the only result in grain and nutritional quality have been positive, she says, but says it will take time for real definitive results to be compiled.
"For people with Celiac disease, it is something that should be avoided, but often times we're seeing a number of people who have self-diagnosed themselves as gluten sensitive or intolerant," she said. "While that's fine to make those personal decisions, when it becomes a problem and becomes media misinformation and begins to have a adverse effect on an entire industry - that's when it gets to be kind of concerning."
