Introducing Kaylee Holt of the Shattuck FFA, Your 2019 Northwest Area Star in Ag Placement

Wed, 03 Apr 2019 13:02:38 CDT

Introducing Kaylee Holt of the Shattuck FFA, Your 2019 Northwest Area Star in Ag Placement During the month of April, the Radio Oklahoma Ag Network and Oklahoma Farm Report is spotlighting the twenty Area Stars of Oklahoma FFA that are among the highest achievers in the organization. The stars come from the five areas in four categories- Star in Ag Placement, Star in Agriscience, Star in Agribusiness and Star in Production Agriculture. This week, we spotlight the five area stars in Agricultural Placement for 2019. One Star Finalist featured in the coming days from each of the categories, will be named the State Star Award Winner during the Oklahoma State FFA Convention coming up April 30 - May 1, 2019 in Oklahoma City.

Today, we continue our coverage with this year's Northwest Area Star in Agriculture Placement, Kaylee Holt of the Shattuck FFA Chapter. Kaylee is recognized for her work raising and managing the show pig operation, part of Holt Livestock.

"I work with baby pigs from the time they are born until they are weaned," she said. "I also help sall and market those animals to people across our state and nation."

To perform her duties properly, Kaylee says she has learned the skills necessary to keep any livestock business running smoothly. As a manager, she is involved in all facets of the business which requires her to stay on top of everything from animal health to marketing and customer satisfaction. In tending to those areas, she has learned how to properly vaccinate her pigs, what pharmaceuticals to use and how to work with her veterinarian. She has also learned how to effectively market her livestock using various platforms from social media, web-based outlets and personal interaction. She leverages that success by following up with customers to share their success stories to build Holt Livestock's audience, brand name and recognition - arguably one of the most important aspects of the business. Kaylee says she came to realize this because of her involvement in the FFA which helped her understand the value of networking.

"I think FFA has made a very big connection for me," she said, "a network of people that I can eventually go out and work for one day."

After graduation, Kaylee plans to attend Oklahoma State University and major in biochemistry and molecular biology and eventually return to Northwest Oklahoma to open a veterinary practice.
