Meet Kellen Allison of the Waynoka FFA Chapter, Your 2019 Northwest Area Star in Ag Production During the month of April, the Radio Oklahoma Ag Network and Oklahoma Farm Report is spotlighting the twenty Area Stars of Oklahoma FFA that are among the highest achievers in the organization. The stars come from the five areas in four categories- Star in Ag Placement, Star in Agriscience, Star in Agribusiness and Star in Production Agriculture. This week, we spotlight the five area stars in Ag Production for 2019. One Star Finalist featured in the coming days from each of the categories, will be named the State Star Award Winner during the Oklahoma State FFA Convention coming up April 30 - May 1, 2019 in Oklahoma City.

We continue our coverage of the 2019 Oklahoma FFA Star Award Finalists with Kellen Allison of the Waynoka FFA Chapter, your 2019 Northwest Area Star in Ag Production. Kellen's farming operation is predominantly cow/calf but is also actively growing his stocker operation. It all began with inheriting 10 pairs from his grandfather which has since grown to include 130 cows and close to 300 stockers every year.

"I've had to learn hard work," said Kellen.

Kellen says his operation has taught him how to balance a checkbook, take out loans, figure intrest rates, break evens points and hedge cattle - and that is all just the business side of things. He is also learning ways to keep his cattle healthy and productive.

"Every year we enhance our genetics every year, I purchase good bulls to put on these cows," he said. "I also feed a higher feed ration to make sure these cattle are getting enough nutrients so they can grow and maintain themselves."

Checking local markets is another part of Kellen's duties. His long-term plans are to build a 15,000 head feed yard in the Waynoka area and grow his own cow/calf operation to 800+ head.

Kellen serves as his local FFA Chapter President. In addition, he is also involved in livestock judging, speeches and community service activities.

"FFA has made me a better speaker," he remarked. " It's helped me make connections that'll last a lifetime and it's given me the best five years in the blue and gold I could ask for."

Post graduation he plans to attend Oklahoma State University to get a degree in Agribusiness.
