Chisholm FFA Member Bree Kisling Ready to Represent Oklahoma in the National FFA Public Speech Contest

Tue, 29 Oct 2019 04:36:26 CDT

Chisholm FFA Member Bree Kisling Ready to Represent Oklahoma in the National FFA Public Speech Contest On the eve of the offical start of the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, the first signs of the Blue and Gold tsunami are starting to show up- the city has welcome signs in many locations from the airport baggage claim area to billboards along the highway to downtown to the city streets. And- members in their iconic Blue and Gold cordoray jackets are starting to be seen. By Wednesday morning, the sidewalks all over downtown Indy will be clogged with thousands of young people in their Blue and Gold jackets- and while many of them are in town to take in the Career Expo- others are here on a mission- to take home a national championship.

One of those young ladies in that second category is Bree Kisling of the Chisholm FFA Chapter in north central Oklahoma. Kisling won the State Championship this past April at the Oklahoma FFA Convention in Prepared Public Speaking- and now she is taking her talents into the National Contest, starting the Preliminaries on Wednesday morning.

Last week, ahead of the trip to Indiana, Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays talked with Bree about her involvement with FFA as well as about her speech won her state honors in Oklahoma City- and that she hopes will take her onto the Final Four stage on Thursday in Indianapolis. You can hear their conversation by clicking on the LISTEN BAR at the bottom of the story.

Kisling says her speech are about the legal challenge that hog farmers that contract with Murphy Brown in North Carolina have been facing- with many of them having nusiance lawsuits brought against them- and the success the trial lawyers have had in convincing juries in that state that the hog farms are harming the quality of life of neighbors who have moved in and around those farms, in some cases, years after the farms were established.

She contends that this challenge to the production of pork in North Carolina has national implications- and that farmers across the country, incuding in Oklahoma, need to be paying attention and working to reverse the trend of those who want to harm our ability to feed a growing population of consumers.

Kisling lays out the challenges in North Carolina- and what she sees as some of the solutions going forward for farmers and ranchers as they deal with neighbors who have no understanding of what it takes to raise animals or crops on land they have moved close to

Bree Kisling will speak Wednesday morning in the opening round of the National Prepared Public Speaking Contest- if she is able to advance- will speak again the national semi finals Wednesday afternoon and if she advances again- will be on the National Final Four Public Stage Thursday. She will present her speech each time- and then defend her position by taking questions from the judges based on her speech.
