Meet Your 2019 National Proficiency Award Winner in Specialty Crops- Garrett Slagel of the Hydro-Eakly FFA Three Oklahoma FFA Members brought home National Championships in the Agricultural Proficiency Awards as they were announced on Friday, November first at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis. One of those high achievers was Garrett Slagel of the Hydro- Eakly FFA, winning in the Specialty Crops- Entrepreneurship/Placement category.

Garrett Slagell has been involved in all stages of production on his family farm for as long as he can remember. One of the specialty crops on the farm are ornamental gourds. Sitting on 60 acres, the gourds are planted in April and harvested in October. Slagell's tasks include planting, harvesting, packaging and shipping. He is supported by his parents, Kendra and Chris and his FFA advisor, Chris Klaassen. The award is sponsored by National FFA Foundation & National FFA Organization

After receiving the award, Slagel talked with FFA Broadcast Intern Clarrisa Larry about the Championship- you can hear that conversation by clicking on the LISTEN BAR below.

The Agricultural Proficiency Awards honor FFA members who, through their Supervised Agricultural Experiences have developed specialized skills that they can apply toward their future careers. Students can compete for awards in 47 areas covering everything from Agricultural Communications to Wildlife Management. Each award area has two categories, placement and entrepreneurship- although in some award area- those two categories are combined.

Placement proficiency awards are given to those whose SAEs are related to employment, apprenticeships, or internships at an agribusiness or agriculture-related organization. Entrepreneurship proficiency awards are given to those whose SAEs are related to ownership of an agribusiness or agriculture-related organization. Proficiency awards are given out at the local, state and national levels.

Judging occurred in Indianapolis during the 92nd National FFA Convention & Expo, Oct. 31-Nov. 2, with the winners announced during an onstage ceremony on Friday, Nov. 1.
