Meet Your 2021 National Proficiency Award Winner in Diversified Crops- Placement- Gage Slagell of Hydro Eakly FFA Eleven Oklahoma FFA members qualified as National Finalists in the Proficiency Awards for the National FFA in 2021. One of those hearing his name called as National Champion is Gage Slagell of the Hydro-Eakly FFA Chapter. Gage was awarded his Championship in the Diversified Crops Production- Placement.

Slagell of the Hydro-Eakly FFA Chapter in Oklahoma works for Triple S Farms and his job descriptions all depend on the crops they're growing at any particular time. The operation grows everything from sweet potatoes to cotton and spinach to peanuts. The crop rotation is focused on soil health, high-yielding crops and sustainable agricultural practices. Slagell is supported by his parents, Kendra and Chris, and his FFA advisor, Chris Klaassen. AgReliant Genetics sponsors this proficiency.

After Gage received top honors in his Proficiency category, FFA Broadcast intern Lydia Johnson talked with him about his achivements.

The Agricultural Proficiency Awards honor FFA members who, through their Supervised Agricultural Experiences have developed specialized skills that they can apply toward their future careers. Students can compete for awards in 47 areas covering everything from Agricultural Communications to Wildlife Management. Each award area has two categories, placement and entrepreneurship- although in some award area- those two categories are combined.

Placement proficiency awards are given to those whose SAEs are related to employment, apprenticeships, or internships at an agribusiness or agriculture-related organization. Entrepreneurship proficiency awards are given to those whose SAEs are related to ownership of an agribusiness or agriculture-related organization. Proficiency awards are given out at the local, state and national levels.

Judging for the 2021 Awards was done virtually ahead of the National Convention. The winners were announced, a few at a time, during each of the General Sessions on Thursday and Friday at the 94th National FFA Convention.
