Introducing Blake Janssen of the Amber-Pocasset FFA Chapter, Your 2022 Southwest Area Star in Agricultural Production

Thu, 28 Apr 2022 08:27:10 CDT

Introducing Blake Janssen of the Amber-Pocasset FFA Chapter, Your 2022 Southwest Area Star in Agricultural Production During the month of April, the Radio Oklahoma Ag Network and Oklahoma Farm Report is spotlighting the 17 Area Stars of Oklahoma FFA that are among the highest achievers in the organization.

The stars come from the five areas in four categories- Star in Ag Placement, Star in Agriscience, Star in Agribusiness and Star in Agricultural Production.

This week, we spotlight the five area stars in Agricultural Production in 2022.

One Star Finalist featured in the coming days from each of the categories, will be named the State Star Award Winner during the 96th Oklahoma State FFA Convention coming up May 3 and 4th in Tulsa, Okla.

This week, our coverage of the 2022 Oklahoma FFA Star Award Finalists concludes with Agricultural Production competitor Blake Janssen of the Amber-Pocasset FFA chapter representing the Southwest Area.

Janssen's project involved raising registered commercial cows, primarily registered Red Angus females.

"I raise these cattle to show and sell and the majority of my time spent outside of school is spent on this project," Janssen said.

Janssen said he enjoys raising Red Angus, because compared to the Black Angus, they are more heat tolerant, easy fleshing, and have good temperament.

Janssen is grateful for the help from his parents, grandparents, ag teachers and his various employers for helping him with his project.

"I would like to expand my current herd of 12 Red Angus to around 50 cows," Janssen said. "I'd also like to get some cross-bred Maine influence cattle."

One of Janssen's favorite moments in FFA was winning the State Sweepstakes trophy.

After high-school graduation, Janssen plans to attend Redlands Community College on a livestock judging scholarship, then transfer to Oklahoma State University to pursue a double major in Agribusiness and Animal Science. He hopes to use his degrees to become a pharmaceutical representative for the livestock industry.
