Meet Your 2018 Central Area Star in Agribusiness, Garrett Koester of the Wellston FFA Chapter

Wed, 18 Apr 2018 10:58:47 CDT

Meet Your 2018 Central Area Star in Agribusiness, Garrett Koester of the Wellston FFA Chapter During the month of April, the Radio Oklahoma Ag Network and Oklahoma Farm Report is spotlighting the twenty Area Stars of Oklahoma FFA that are among the highest achievers in the organization. The stars come from the five areas in four categories- Star in Ag Placement, Star in Agriscience, Star in Agribusiness and Star in Production Agriculture. This week, we are spotlighting the five area stars in Agribusiness, who will compete for the State Star Award in Agribusiness during the Oklahoma State FFA Convention coming up May 1-2, 2018 in Oklahoma City.

This Wednesday, we are featuring Garrett Koester, your 2018 Central Area Star in Agribusiness from the Wellston FFA Chapter. Koester has rodeoed since he was just seven years old, working his way up through the ranks of competition. In that time, Koester has earned the support of a variety of agribusinesses, such as Circle C Feed, which sponsor his participation in events as he travels the rodeo circuit throughout the year.

"They sponsor me with feed through my rodeo competition and in turn, I promote their businesses and talk to numerous people at rodeos across the state," Koester explained. "I've been able to represent these companies by performing at a high level, making these companies look good - because, the better my equine athletes and I perform using their products, the better people will recognize these products."

Through his involvement in the FFA, Koester says he has gained invaluable experience speaking and communicating with other people in a variety of situations that has helped him to be a successful spokesman for the companies he represents. He credits his ag teachers with pushing him and his fellow classmates at participating in a variety of activities and encouraging them to strive for success in everything they do.

"To be successful in the area of competition at this level, you have to put in lots of work and lots of time just as you would showing sheep or steers," he said. "You have to go home and work with your animals and put a lot of time and effort into it."

As his high school graduation draws near, Koester has his eye on the prize with aspirations of attending Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant, Okla. to join the college rodeo team and eventually break into the pro-circuit one day.
