Kyle Hilbert Ready to Represent Oklahoma Next Week- Video Added

The 2014 National FFA Convention in Louisville, Kentucky will be a defining moment in the life of 42 individuals vying to become a National FFA officer. Kyle Hilbert of the Depew FFA Chapter will represent the state of Oklahoma. He is excited for the opportunity because of the influence and impact national officers have on FFA members.

"I know from the opportunity to serve as a chapter and state officer, there's a unique way to connect with members that happens that's only available in the blue jacket," Hilbert said. "There is something really special about that and the way that younger FFA members will come up to you and ask for advice and help and the way you are able to convey your life stories to help them deal with whatever they have going on in their life."

Radio Oklahoma Network Farm Director Ron Hays interviewed Hilbert about his FFA experience. You can hear that conversation by clicking on the LISTEN BAR below.

Since June Hilbert has been training and preparing for the extensive interview process. He has traveled to Wisconsin and Colorado to train with Dr. Al Snyder. He is a hypnotist and he does a lot of National FFA Officer training each year. Recently Hilbert spent time at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas. Agricultural education professor Dr. David Frazier put on this event for 30 national officer candidates to put them through the selection process, similar to what candidates will go through later on this month at National FFA Convention. This allowed Hilbert to get acquainted with some of the other national candidates, which will help ease some of the stress later on this month.

"It's quite an experience knowing that I'm not just representing myself, I'm not just there representing my hometown of Depew, but representing the entire state of Oklahoma and knowing that is something that's a big driving factor that pushes me every day to keep practicing and working to be as fully prepared as I can whenever I arrive in Louisville," Hilbert said.

Hilbert will arrive in Louisville in less than a week to start the national officer competition. In talking with others that have gone through the process, some have said it will be a very slow week, while other say the week will fly by, but the one common answer is that this will be experience that he will never forget, whether you get selected as a national officer or not.

"It's one of the most growing opportunities you will ever get the opportunity to experience," Hilbert said.

Hilbert has already felt that growth in preparing the last several months for the leadership competition. The three main subject areas are FFA, American education and agriculture. The fourth component is about getting to know yourself. Hilbert said the whole interview process is behavioral interviews where questions will be about giving life examples where you have failed or when you lacked integrity.

"Being able to on the spot answer the question has been a great experience for me getting to know myself and grow as a person," Hilbert said.

If Hilbert becomes a national officer he has already mentally prepared for what that would mean in taking a year off from college to serve the FFA organization and FFA members nationwide. That is something he is ready and willing to do

"The good just out weighs any of the short comings of being away for a year," Hilbert said. "It's an experience of a lifetime, getting to serve in the unique experience in the blue jacket for another year is just something that I would absolutely love the opportunity to do."
