Young and Old- Oklahoma FFA Members Excel at 87th National FFA Convention in Louisville

Young and Old- Oklahoma FFA Members Excel at 87th National FFA Convention in Louisville The Oklahoma FFA Association once again made its mark on the national scene at the 2014 National FFA Convention and Expo in Louisville with the achievers from Oklahoma spanning almost the entire age span of youth who are eligible to be a member of the organization. That includes Oklahoma State University Senior Zach Weichel who was named the Star Farmer of America and was one of the elder statesmen of the Oklahoma FFA contingent at the 2014 convention ranging down in age to Indianola High School Sophomore Kale Parker who was named the National Champion in Creed Speaking and was one of the youngest.

Other National winners included Emma Meeks of Dickson FFA, who won a National Championship in the Agriscience Division for Food Products and Processing Systems, the Kingfisher FFA Chapter team in the Marketing Plan Competition and the Fairview FFA Chapter team in the Ag Communications Contest. (The Kingfisher squad that won the Marketing Plan is pictured here)

Members of the Fairview team that won the Marketing Plan contest included Sarah Gruntmeir, Lane Holt, and Colton Smith. Members of the Fairview team in the Ag Communications include Ashley Tucker, Bethany Niles, and Maggie Martens.

Kale Parker does not come from a farm background, but quickly embraced the blue and gold as he won the state Creed Contest in May of this year at the 2014 State Convention. Parker advanced from the preliminaries to the Semis to the Final Four in the National Contest in Louisville, with the Final Four held on a large stage with about a thousand watching the four speakers who had advanced. Parker faced three young ladies in the contest from Maryland, Georgia and North Dakota. Parker offered a passionate presentation of the Creed, and answered the three questions asked of all candidates with confidence.

The finalists presented the Creed midday Thursday and had to wait until Friday night to learn who had won the contest. Parker heard his name called as the National Champiion- and afterwards talked with FFA Communications Intern Courtney Gerstenecker about winning this title. Two other teams from Oklahoma placed in the top ten of their contests. The Claremore FFA Chapter claimed fourth in the national Horse Evaluation Contest. Team Members included Lori Cohen, Mattison Lemmons, Taylor Stephens, and Patrick Vinson- Lemmons was the second high indivdual of the contest.

The Adair FFA Chapter placed tenth nationally in the Poultry Evaluation contest- team members included Toni Morgan, Mackenzie Pippin, Mara Pride, and Hannah Taylor.
