Statewide FFA Competition in 39 Events Set for this Weekend at OSU

Thu, 23 Apr 2009 13:34:23 CDT

Statewide FFA Competition in 39 Events Set for this Weekend at OSU It's the state finals for a variety of FFA contests and judging events Friday evening and Saturday in Stillwater at the 2009 State FFA Interscholastics. Over 1,300 FFA members will be involved in the events- from representing their chapter as a speaker to being a part of a team competing for statewide honors- and in many cases- the right to represent Oklahoma at the national level next fall in Indianapolis.

There are 11 Public Speaking Divisions, as well as 28 Career Development Events that will be decided over the two days. Approximately 315 total teams and 1,300 FFA members expected to participate on the OSU campus.

Events range from Livestock, Dairy, and Meats Evaluation, to Advanced Animal Science Quiz Bowl, Parliamentary Procedure, Food Science and Technology, Agricultural Mechanics and Floriculture.

Sweepstakes trophies are up for grabs. One for the most points won by a single teacher Ag-Ed program. The other for most points won by a multiple teacher Ag-Ed program. Last year’s sweepstakes winners were Claremore (Single Teacher) and Kingfisher (Multiple Teacher).

The top team and the top three high individuals in each event will be recognized and receive their trophies and medals on stage at the upcoming State FFA Convention, April 28-29, in Oklahoma City.

Sponsors to the Oklahoma FFA Foundation will provide $22,000 in scholarships to the high individuals in several of the event areas. Sponsors will also provide cash awards totaling $20,000 to first place teams qualifying for national competition in Indianapolis, IN, this coming October.

The Interscholastics are like the opening rounds of the state convention- with the high individuals from the competition in Stillwater this weekend to be honored on stage this coming week.
