Oklahoma FFA Ready for Downtown Oklahoma City Invasion April 28-29
Wed, 22 Apr 2009 6:07:19 CDT
More than 10,000 Oklahoma FFA members representing 355 high school agricultural education programs are expected to attend the 83rd State FFA Convention, April 28- 29, at the Cox Convention Center in downtown Oklahoma City. This year's convention theme is Step Up, Stand Out.
The state officers will challenge FFA members to step up by living their values, showing their pride, and encouraging others. By stepping up, young people are truly standing out. The state FFA convention is the culmination of a year's activities for FFA members. It is an opportunity for individual awards and recognition, delegate business, officer elections and a celebration of chapter accomplishments.
The Oklahoma FFA Foundation has raised $240,000 this year from sponsors who will provide cash awards, scholarships, plaques and honor banquets to award winners and degree recipients. Title sponsors of the convention are Blue & Gold Sausage Company, CEV Multimedia, Chesapeake Energy Corporation, and the Oklahoma Ford Dealers.
The state FFA officers, a team of eight student leaders, plan the convention and conduct the official ceremonies. The officers kick off the convention the morning of April 28 with a reflections program designed to set the tone of the convention. The 2008-2009 state FFA officers are Chelsea Clifton, president, Kingfisher; Chasity Beasler, secretary, Wellston; Carly Schnaithman, reporter, Garber; Evan Newpher, northeast vice president, Depew; Riley Pagett, northwest vice president, Woodward; Blake Matlock, central vice president, Tecumseh; Amy Peel, southeast vice president, Wetumka; and Sarah Reasnor, southwest vice president from Elgin.
We have talked in these days leading up to this year's convention with Chelsea Clifton of Kingfisher, who is the state President of the organization- and you can hear our conversation about the upcoming gathering of next week, as well as her thoughts on her year as the state leader of this youth leadership development organization.
