Tue, 28 Apr 2009 22:07:57 CDT
Managing two herds of stocker steers. Cultivating a wheat crop. Maintaining a perfect 4.00 grade-point average. Cordell FFA member Jeremy Weichel finds himself busy year-round.
Weichel's passion for agriculture has earned him one of Oklahoma FFA's highest honors: 2009 State Star in Agricultural Production. His Supervised Agricultural Experience program was rated the best agricultural production program among the 684 FFA members who received the State FFA Degree during the 83rd State FFA Convention on April 29.
With the honor, Weichel received the Governor's Trophy as well as a $2,000 cash award sponsored by Davis Farms of Guthrie, Farm Credit of East Central Oklahoma and Sirloin Club of Oklahoma.
Through his SAE program, Weichel has purchased 80 acres and rents an additional 160 acres where he raises stocker steers and grows wheat.
"As soon as I was big enough to grab a wrench or open a gate, I started helping my dad and grandpa with the family operation," Weichel said. "This was when I first realized that ranching and farming were things I wanted to do for myself. I enrolled in my first agricultural education course my eighth grade year and haven't looked back since."
Weichel said his experiences have had a huge impact on his life.
"FFA has introduced me to many opportunities that have helped shape the person I am," Weichel said. "The experience and knowledge I have gained through FFA have helped me prepare for an exciting and successful future."
The 18-year-old Cordell FFA member is the son of Keith and Lana Weichel. His agricultural education instructor and FFA advisor is Brian Dowdle.
