Pawnee FFA Claims Top Honors at 2017 Tulsa Farm Show Livestock Handling Skills Contest

Sat, 09 Dec 2017 21:34:10 CST

Pawnee FFA Claims Top Honors at 2017 Tulsa Farm Show Livestock Handling Skills Contest The 2017 Livestock Handling Skills Scholarship Competition featured ten FFA Chapters from across the state of Oklahoma- and the top three teams were within 21 points of one another when all elements of the contest were added up.

The ten Chapters qualified by having the top scores in a test given back in July during the Big Three Livestock event on campus at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater. Two top chapters from each of the five FFA Districts qualified to bring their team to the 2017 Tulsa Farm Show, where they competed in two scoring events. The first of those elements was a Presentation Board that could be developed by the team members on one of two subjects- Genomics and Its Value to the Beef Cattle Industry or Soil Health and its Relationship to Forage and Rangeland Health. The remainder of the score is obtained when the team members work together in handling two calves- bringing a calf into a chute and working that calf as they vacinate, check temperature, implant and eartag the animal. They are scored on speed but also how well they work together, the accuracy of their record keeping as they do the work and hew well the job is performed.

With all three scores tabulated- first place at the 2017 contest was earned by the Pawnee FFA Chapter, with the a team consisting of Madison Vance, Braylee Heisler and McKenzie Nelson (Pictured here)

The Madill FFA Chapter team made up of Rio Bonham, Camille Martinez and Jake McHatton were only five points behind first place Pawnee- earning reserve champion honors in second place.

Placing third on Friday was the team representing the Locust Grove FFA Chapter. Team members included Matt Breedlove, Conner Pell and Skyler Heat.

Pictures of all of the Presentation Boards and all of the teams can be seen and downloaded on our Flickr Page for the2017 contest- click here to jump there and take a look.
