Grand Champion Steer Sells for $50,000 at OYE Sale of Champions

Wed, 23 Mar 2011 20:01:09 CDT

Grand Champion Steer Sells for $50,000 at OYE Sale of Champions As they usually do, the Grand Champions led off the 2011 Oklahoma Youth Expo Sale of Champions at the State Fair Arena in Oklahoma City. And, for the second year in a row, several groups went together togther to buy the "Grands" of the show.

The Grand Champion Steer, owned by Ryan Stults of Luther FFA, sold for $50,000 and was purchased by a group that included Express Ranches, Bank of Western Oklahoma, First Liberty, Tener's, Chain Land & Cattle Company, McAfee & Taft and Robyn Printing & Promotions and Hartzog Conger Cason & Neville. The pricetag on this year's steer was the same as a year ago. Click here for our earlier story on the Grand Champion Steer- including our YouTube of the Steer selection.

The Grand Champion Barrow- shown for the second year in a row by Brianna Robinson of El Reno FFA, brought $20,000 and was purchased by Oklahoma Farm Bureau and Central States Trailers. Brianna also had the top Barrow in 2010 and also received $20,000 last March.

The owner of theGrand Champion Market Lamb, Kayla Brown of Merritt FFA, had an extra advocate for her animal- Lt. Governor Todd Lamb. Lamb pleaded with buyuers to make sure we got top dollar for this "lamb" and he helped pull in an extra thousand dollars for the 2011 winner- which ended up being purchased for $21,000 (up a thousand dollars from 2010 for the Grand Lamb) and bought by Touchstone Energy, Bank of Western Oklahoma and the Choctaw Nation.

The only "Grand" that sold for less than the Grand in 2010 was the Grand Champion Goat shown by Mercedes Hardin of Hennessey FFA- which sold for $12,000. The 2011 buyers included Farm Credit Associations of Oklahoma, Industrial Ignition, Showrite Feeds and Loving Care Home Health. The top goat of the approximately one thousand that were shown fell short of the 2010 price of $21,000. Hardin has been to the Sale of Champions three times now- as the owner of the Grand Champion in 2009, Reserve Grand Champion in 2010 and now Grand Champion in 2011- her final year to show at the OYE.

We have pictures of the Grands, the Reserve Grands and the Bronze Medallion animals on our FLICKR page- click here to see the pictures from not just Monday afternoon- but from the entire Oklahoma Youth Expo.

Here are the Reserve Grand Champions- their owner, sale price and buyers at the 2011 OYE:
