Young Rylee Straka looked cute as could be as she led her Hereford Champion Steer into the Sale Ring at the Oklahoma Youth Expo as the 19th animal to sell on Monday afternoon. Little did she know that she would earn a couple of thousand dollars more than the breed champions that sold just ahead of her as a large group of groups and individuals banded together to buy her Hereford steer in memory of A J Smith, longtime Editor of the Oklahoma Cowman at the Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association. Smith lost his battle with cancer last summer at the conclusion of the annual meeting of the OCA in Midwest City.
This marks the second animal a similar group has purchased in honor of AJ Smith- the top Hereford Steer at the Tulsa State Fair last October was also purchased as a tribute to the very popular Smith.
To the right is the picture of young Rylee and the large entourage who helped buy this steer for $7,100. The group included:
Oklahoma Cattlewomen
Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association
Oklahoma Cowman Magazine
Oklahoma Junior Cattlemen's Association
MCS Auction Services
National Cattle Services
Oklahoma Farm Bureau
American Farmers & Ranchers
Union State Bank
Tulsa State Fair
John Sampson- Midwest Farm Shows
Chisholm Kinder
Jerald and Jennifer Callahan
Diamond Hats
State Representatives Steve Kouplen, Don Armes, Dale DeWitt and Eddie Fields
