Biosecurity a Priority at 2014 Oklahoma Youth Expo

Extra emphasis on biosecurity in the hog barns will be seen in 2014 at the Oklahoma Youth expo- according to OYE's Tyler Norvell. Since last year's Youth Expo, the swine industry has seen the rise of the deadly and economically costly diseast PEDv. It's estimated that as many as five million piglets have died from the contagious disease,w ith Steve Meyer of Paragon Economics saying as many 1.3 million died in Janaury across the country.
Oklahoma hog farms have had their share of PEDv cases, and Norvell says that OYE is going the extra mile to make sure nothing is passed on from pig to pig- or from trailer to trailer. In the conversation he had a few days ago with Ron Hays, he reported that the show was working closely with State Vet Dr. Rod Hall as well as with Roy Lee Lindsey of the Oklahoma Pork Council. The signs seen above have been in place on the barns since they were remodeled a few years ago- but they take on new meaning with this serious challenge to the economic well being of the swine industry.
