The annual kickoff banquet for the 101st Oklahoma Youth Expo was held this past week at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. The focus for the banquet one month ahead of the official opening of the 2016 OYE was to solidify support from key sponsors and auction off the Chalices that will be given to the top winners in all four species of the market animal show. Top supporters of the show bid for the right to purchase the chalices of the Grand Champions, Reserve Grand Champions and the Bronze Medallion winners.
The person, company or organization that buys the trophies wins the right to present the Chalice to that Champion at the Sale of Champions for the Oklahoma Youth Expo on March 18th.
Besides the twelve chalices that were auctioned, live and silent auctions were held- and altogether- $90,000 was raised to help support the Sale of Champions at the 2016 OYE.
The Grand Champion Chalices were purchased by:
Grand Champion Market Steer- Oklahoma Farm Bureau, $6500.00
Grand Champion Market Barrow- American Farmers & Ranchers, $5000.00
Grand Champion Market Lamb- National Livestock Credit Company, $5000.00
Grand Champion Market Goat- Farm Credit of Western Oklahoma, $5000.00
Two special awards were announced by the Sirloin Club of Oklahoma, the booster group that has supported the Oklahoma Youth Expo and the shows that have preceeded it for decades. The Sirloin Club presented their 2016 President's Award to Ag Youth Magazine, owned and operated by Larry and Mary Peck. The President's Award has been given since 1996 and has gone to organizations and companies that have been major supporters of the 4-H and FFA members who have brought livestock to Oklahoma City to shown in the "World's Largest Junior Livestock Show."
The Sirloin Club also announced that Scott Eisenhauer is the Club's 2016 Show Honoree. Eisenhauer becomes the 70th honoree as selected by the Sirloin Club, which started this recognition in 1966. For the first ninteen years, the Sirloin Club honored one person annually- in 1985- they named farm broadcasting legends Wayne Liles of KWTV News9 and Russell Pierson of WKY TV and Radio as joint Show Honorees- and have named double honorees nineteen times since then.
In 2015, for the 100th Anniverary of the Junior Livestock Show, the Sirloin Club did not name a specific Show Honoree but instead called all Past Honorees the Honorees of the Centennial event.
Eisenhauer has been an active part of the Sirloin Club- including serving as President of the organization. He is the General Manager of P&K Equipment and P&K Midwest- overseeing Dealer locations in both Oklahoma and Iowa. In the picture above, Eisenhauer is receiving the award from Celeste Rule Nelson, who was a Show Honoree back in 1983.
Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays talked with Eisenhauer after he was given the Show Honoree Designation- and you can hear their conversation by clicking on the LISTEN BAR below.
