Kolton Baber of Big Pasture FFA Shows Supreme Champion Purebred Gilt with His York at 2016 OYE

Sat, 12 Mar 2016 15:21:09 CST

Kolton Baber of Big Pasture FFA Shows Supreme Champion Purebred Gilt with His York at 2016 OYE Over thirteen hundred purebred gilts were walked in front of judges Brad Mortensen and Nick Mauck on Friday at the 2016 Oklahoma Youth Expo- and one of the last pigs they saw turned out to be the best one of the show. Mortensen was the "sift" judge and he literally looked at every pig that was shown on Friday, each pig getting an initial five to ten seconds look. With that first impression- Mortensen sent that gilt up the hill to the main show ring or to the larger ring adjacent to where he was doing the sorting. After he had looked at every pig in a given class, he and the main show ring judge, Nick Mauck, walked through the lower ring to determine if any pigs there deserved second consideration and a chance to compete for placing in that class.

The breeds were shown in alpabetical order, which meant the Yorkshires were the final breed of the day- and out of the final class of Yorkshires came the Supreme Champion Purebred Gilt and the Reserve Supreme Champion Purebred Gilt.

Showing the top gilt on Friday was Kolton Baber of Big Pasture FFA (pictured here). The Reserve Supreme Champion Purebred Gilt was the reserve Champion York, shown by Adison Thompson of Noble 4-H.

After the show was over- and several purebred Gilts were selected for the Night of Stars Gilt Show that happens on Wednesday evening, March 16, Radio Oklahoma Network Farm Director Ron Hays talked with lead judge Nick Mauck about the pigs and kids he saw over the previous twelve hours. Listen to their conversation by clicking on the LISTEN BAR below.
