Baylor Bonham of Newcastle FFA Shows Grand Champion Market Steer at 2016 OYE

Baylor Bonham of Newcastle FFA Shows Grand Champion Market Steer at 2016 OYE A large crowd gathered for the Thursday evening Oklahoma Youth Expo recognition of Scholarship winners and the Grand Champion Drive in the State Fair Arena in Oklahoma City. Those who came saw seventy two 4-H and FFA members receive scholarships that total more than $180,000, while the participants in the four Grand Champion Drives jockeyed for the right to lead or drive one of the first four animals that will be auctioned in the Sale of Champions on Friday afternoon.


The Grand Champion Market Steer was the Champion Crossbred in the 2016 show- owned by Baylor Bonham of Newcastle FFA. While Baylor has won Grand Champion Market Steer titles before- including the 2013 Grand Champion Steer honors at the Tulsa State Fair- this is the first time he has won the Grand Championship at the Oklahoma Youth Expo.Baylor had the Bronze Medallion Steer last year at the 100th Anniversary Edition of the OYE.


The Reserve Grand Champion Steer belongs to Tommy Glover for the Champion Shorthorn that he brought into the Grand Drive. Glover had two chances at Grand Honors this year, owning both the Champion Shorthorn and the Champion Chianina Steer.


The Bronze Medallion Market Steer was the Reserve Crossbred Steer, being shown by Kennedy Vanzandt of Payne County 4-H.

After the Grand Drive, Radio Oklahoma Network Farm Director Ron Hays talked with Steer Show Judge Shane Bedwell about what he was looking for in a top steer, if the show world matches up with giving today's consumer a great eating experience and his thoughts on the value of livestock shows to 4-H and FFA members.
