Ty Goss of Leedey FFA Tops 2017 OYE Purebred Gilt Show with Berkshire Champion Gilt

Sat, 11 Mar 2017 07:10:31 CST

Ty Goss of Leedey FFA Tops 2017 OYE Purebred Gilt Show with Berkshire Champion Gilt The 2017 Oklahoma Youth Expo has its first major species champion- the Supreme Champion Purebred Gilt as chosen by lead Purebred Gilt judge Andy Rash. After sorting through eight breeds and looking at all eight of those champions, Rash congratulated Ty Goss of the Leedey FFA Chapter who won top honors with his Champion Berkshire Gilt. The Berkshire Gilt will be the first of 55 purebred gilts that will sell on Wednesday evening at the Night of Stars OYE Gilt Sale- with the other half of the 110 gilts to be sold coming from Commercial Gilt sale that will conclude on Saturday afternoon.

Because of the success of the Night of Stars Gilt Sale that is held annually as a part of the Oklahoma Youth Expo- the OYE management decided to add an extra day to the breeding gilt show here in 2017, which means that the Purebred Gilt show became a day and a half- and the commercial breeding gilt show will also be a day and a half.

Day one of the breeding gilt show had the hog show ring active ahead of any of the other livestock species that are a part of the OYE- and a total of six breeds were paraded in front of the sift judge Doug Albright- who pushed the best of each class up the hill to the main ring where lead purebred gilt judge Andy Rash took over. Rash looked at the Berkshires, Chesters, Hampshires, Herefords, Spots and Yorkshires on Thursday- and then considered which animals are the top of each class in the Polands and Durocs on Friday- finishing with the selection of the Berkshire Champas the Purebred Supreme Champion.
