State Representative Leslie Osborn Wins Legislative Showmanship at 2017 OYE

Wed, 15 Mar 2017 06:41:35 CDT

State Representative Leslie Osborn Wins Legislative Showmanship at 2017 OYE Tuesday night was a great night at the 2017 Oklahoma Youth Expo as about one hundred state lawmakers came and spent time learning the ins and outs of showing a calf, hog, lamb or a goat from one of the 4-H or FFA members involved with the show. Tyler Norvell, Executive Director of the OYE, says the Legislative event has grown and grown- starting with a dozen lawmakers just a few years ago to last night when about two thirds of the state legislature made time to be a part of the evening, even with the State House adjourned for the rest of this week.

Each lawmaker and other dignitaries and supporters of the young people were matched up with a 4-H or FFA member and competed in one of the four classes of livestock. For the lawmakers, it was them being matched up with a youth from their home district when possible.

Winning the friendly competition of the evening was State Representative Leslie Osborn, the chair of the House Appropriations Committee. Not showing but showing up to enjoy getting to talk to OYE supporters were both the Oklahoma Speaker of the House, Charles McCall of Atoka and the Governor of Oklahoma, Mary Fallin.

Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays talked after the evening was complete with Norvell about why lawmakers were willing to give up their Tuesday night and be a part of the OYE experience. Norvell believes it is because these lawmakers and state leaders understand the value of the life skills learned by the young men and ladies as they care for another living being and get it ready for show day. Norvell says those life skills of responsibility, dependability, and hard work help make these young people very desirable to companies looking to hire for their work force- and this preparation will make these 4-H and FFA members great citizens of Oklahoma as they become adults.
