2018 Oklahoma Youth Expo Sets Records- $1.3 Million Paid Out to Youth in Sale of Champions- $115,000 to Grand Steer

Sat, 17 Mar 2018 16:00:17 CDT

2018 Oklahoma Youth Expo Sets Records- $1.3 Million Paid Out to Youth in Sale of Champions- $115,000 to Grand Steer Records were set at the 2018 Oklahoma Youth Expo Sale of Champions, as the first of 213 animals to sell- the Grand Champion Market Steer saw bidding cruise through the $100,000 mark- and end up beating the previous record easily with a final bid of $115,000. That eclipsed the previous OYE Steer Record of $101,000 that came in 2015 during the 100th Anniversary celebration of the OYE, known to be the World's Largest Junior Livestock Show.

The total dollars invested into the 213 4-H and FFA members that had animals in the 2018 Sale of Champions came in at $1.3 million- smashing last year's record $1.15 million.

The top steer was the Champion Crossbred of the show and was named Grand Champion by judge Paul Clapp. Tenley Mefford of Tillman County 4-H owned and showed the steer, named "Beast' and was all smiles as the bid eclipsed last year's steer price of $75,000(paid in both 2017 and 2016) and then broke into six figures with Auctioneer Jon Cooper announcing the final price of $115,000.

Pictures and videos of 12 year old Tenley have gone viral as Judge Paul Clapp had her slap her own steer to declare it the 2018 OYE Grand Champion Steer. Judge Paul Clapp told the huge crowd to watch and don't clap right away as they waited for his decision as to which Steer would be named the Grand Champion Steer for the 2018 Oklahoma Youth Expo- the final decision to be made for the 2018 show.

He went up and down the line one last time- stopped at the very end of the line and talked for a moment with young Tenley for a moment- then he took the halter as she was escorted away-
the 4-Her made her way back towards "Beast" and approached the rear of the steer carefully and BANG- gently slapped her own steer to declare it the Grand Champion of the 2018 OYE!!!! Here is one angle of that one of a kind selection from Thursday evening:

The record price came with a long list of buyers that made up the consortium of the Grand Champion including:

Bank of Western Oklahoma, Livestock Nutrition Center, McAfee & Taft, OKC Chamber, Express Ranches, Frazer Bank (Dennis Vernon ), Loyd and Judy Benson, Pioneer Cellular, AFR, Bill Crawford, Cassidy Grain Company, Wilmes Ford. The Grand Champion Market Barrow for 2018(pictrured here) was shown by Kennedy Edwards of the Maysville 4-H Club- her Champion Hamp that was named by best of more than 2,500 barrows in 2018 was purchased by first time OYE Sale of Champions Buyer Westgate Market Place for $25,000- the same price tag that the 2017 Grand Champion received.

The Grand Champion Market Lamb was shown by Morrison FFA Senior Payton Harris who had the Champion Crossbred of the show- her lamb went for $15,000 and was bought by Touchstone Electric and Oklahoma State Fair- the price for the 2018 Lamb was the same price paid in 2017 for the nest market lamb.

The Grand Champion Market Goat also saw a final bid of $15,000- as Kingfisher FFA Junior Bree Taylor walked the top Market Goat of the show into the sale ring for the second year in a row. The Grand Champion Goat was purchased by McDonalds, the Diamond Hats, Bank of Western Oklahoma and Farm Credit of Western Oklahoma.

The Reserve Grand Champion Market Steer was led into the ring by show veteran Tommy Glover of Elgin 4-H- who had the Grand Champion Steer in 2017 at the OYE- as well as the Reserve Grand Champion Steer a a few weeks ago at the National Western Stock Show in Denver. The 2018 Reserve Steer was the top Chianina of the show and was purchased by CSTK Trailers, Farm Credit of Western Oklahoma and Touchstone Electric.
