Kylee Deniz is director of marketing for the National Pork Board and the National Pork Checkoff. Currently residing in Oklahoma, she spends most of her time on the job supporting the 42 state pork associations as well as producers on the farm, providing them with the tools and resources they need to successfully market their product. In addition to these duties, a significant aspect of her role is communicating with consumers about the quality of US pork. Recently, she explained in depth what her role is at the NPB and how the industry is working around ongoing challenges it is faced with currently in a conversation with Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays during a visit to the Oklahoma Youth Expo held this past week in Oklahoma City. “The National Pork Board is actually a dream job that I didn’t know I was going to get,” Deniz said, telling the story of how she came to work for the pork industry in this capacity. “I first worked in an advertising agency as an account manager for the National Pork Board and they thought I was doing good work. So, I joined the Pork Board about three and a half years ago.”
One of the most interesting aspects of her job, she says, is getting to work creatively in the digital space in order to reach consumers and drive demand for US pork.
“For us (the digital space) is really an opportunity to leverage (Checkoff funds) and we’re doing that a handful of ways. You obviously don’t want to put all your money into one basket. But, we’ve had a lot of luck working with influencers,” she said explaining how she collaborates with prominent vloggers to showcase the versatility of pork through various recipes and cooking tutorials. “That’s not something that is coming directly from the National Pork Board, but instead we’re just watching that message and making sure they’re doing it right.”
Currently, the pork industry is dealing with a variety of issues. With pressure from tariffs, anti-agricultural activism and the constant risk of a disease outbreak with African Swine Fever running rampant in other parts of the world, Deniz says US producers are demonstrating their resiliency.
“Certainly in the industry we’re all keeping a close eye on everything that’s going on both domestically and abroad and it seems like there are more people against us than for us which is unfortunate. But, I think that agriculture is consistent,” Deniz said. “I think if we stay consistent in who we are and our message - that’s going to play out in the long run and long as we stay together we’ll be ok.”
