Lasting Legacy Campaign for New OCA Headquarters to Serve as a Symbol of Strength

Farm Director, KC Sheperd, is talking with the executive director of the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Foundation, Mariah Reimer, about the campaign for a new headquarters for the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s’ Association.

“For the first time, the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association and the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Foundation will be doing a capital campaign called ‘The Lasting Legacy Campaign to Preserve your Industry,’” Reimer said. “What is so special about this, and the reason it is such a once-in-a-lifetime, is because it is for a new building for the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association. A new home for our members, and really a representation of the strength of our industry.”

The Lasting Legacy campaign is a three-million-dollar capital campaign for the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association’s new headquarters. The new headquarters will be located in Oklahoma’s Stockyards City.

Since 1968, OCA has been in the existing office located in the historic Stockyards of Oklahoma City. The new building will feature more office space for staff, living quarters, an event center, an outdoor gathering place, and an all-around updated look and feel, while preserving the tradition that our current office holds.

“Where else would we go than Cowtown,” Reimer said. “That is where OCA’s home has always been.”

ADUFA Reauthorization Ensures Animal Health is a Priority

In this episode of Beef Buzz, I am featuring commentary from National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Chief Veterinarian, Dr. Kathy Simmons and Senior Director of Government Affairs, Tanner Beymer, about the reauthorization of the Animal Drug User Fee Act (ADUFA).

ADUFA must be reauthorized every five years to provide user fees to the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine to hire expert drug reviewers and to provide information to drug sponsors for new animal drugs.

ADUFA allows the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) to collect fees from animal health companies, which fund the agency’s review and approval process for new animal drugs. ADUFA ensures that the FDA has an efficient system for authorizing new cattle medicines and diagnostic tools that keep livestock healthy and protects our safe, wholesome food supply. NCBA fought hard to ensure that this latest ADUFA reauthorization contained no post-market amendments that would harm the effectiveness of the FDA’s review process, disrupt producers’ access to cattle medicines, or simply keep the legislation from passing Congress before the September 30th deadline.

“This money means new animal drugs in our toolbox will continue in a timely manner, and it also fosters innovation because it facilitates the drug approval process for the sponsors,” Simmons told Hays in an interview earlier this year.

Oklahoma State Research to Enhance Value of Beef

Weekly, Oklahoma State University Extension Beef Cattle Nutrition Specialist Paul Beck offers his expertise on the beef cattle industry. This is a part of the weekly series known as the “Cow-Calf Corner.” Today, he talks about beef enhancing research.

Consumers relate the color of meat to freshness and base their purchasing decisions on color more frequently than any other quality trait. When purchasing beef, studies show that consumers want to see a bright cherry red color, deeming other color deviations as unacceptable off color of beef products is a significant economic cost to the beef production system. A recent published study from Oklahoma State University meat science researchers noted that the US beef industry loses $3.73 billion annually due to beef discoloration. Here are some highlights of efforts by OSU Animal and Food Sciences faculty and students to improve beef value.

Dr. Gretchan Mafi and Laura Yoder studied natural antioxidants and different packaging types on color and freshness of ground beef. Consumers prefer traditional foam trays with PVC plastic overwrap but this may limit shelf life. Alternatives like “Master Packaging” (MP) or “Modified Atmospheric Packaging” (MAP) will extend shelf life of meat products. In a MP, products are first packaged in traditional PVC and placed into a large bag which is flushed with inert gasses, such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen, or carbon dioxide, to create an anaerobic condition. Modified Atmospheric Packaging is where beef is place in rigid trays with air evacuated and then backflushed with gas mixtures.

Members from Across Oklahoma Advocate for Issues at Annual LMA D.C. Fly-In

Farm Director, KC Sheperd, had the chance to catch up with the Livestock Marketing Association’s director of government and industry affairs, Luke Hale. Over 50 Livestock Marketing Association members and staff met with senators, U.S. representatives, congressional staffers, and U.S. Department of Agriculture officials Sept. 18-19, during the association’s 17th D.C. Fly-In. Hale talks to KC about highlights from the event.

LMA strictly represents stockyards, sales barns, and dealers, Hale said. Some of the services LMA provides include regulatory assistance for compliance as well as legislative and government affairs on matters regulated by the Packers and Stockyards Act.

“Livestock Marketing Association holds a D.C. member fly-in each year,” Hale said. “It is just a time for sale barn market owners and dealers to come up and visit with members of Congress about some of the issues they are dealing with, any changes we are working on for the Packers and Stockyards Act, and also meet with some agency officials that are in charge of regulatory oversight.”

Angus Foundation offers granite paver at the American Angus Association® headquarters.

It’s not too late to leave a lasting mark on the American Angus Association®. By donating to “Building an Angus Legacy” cattlemen, alumni of the junior program and others can have a paver in front of the Association headquarters in Saint Joseph, Missouri, personally engraved.

An unrestricted, tax-deductible donation of $300 to the Angus Foundation secures a paver.

All the proceeds from the “Building an Angus Legacy!” campaign support the Angus Foundation and its mission to advance Angus education, youth and research programs.

In 2013, the front walkway of the Association was remodeled and each of the new 6-by-12-inch granite pavers became available for recognition. Previous donors have listed their names or their farm’s name. Others have made a donation in memory of a loved one or the name of their group or state association.

Dugger named finalist for 4-H Youth in Action Award

The National 4-H Council has announced Jenessa Dugger of Harthshorne, Oklahoma, is a runner-up for the prestigious 2024 4-H Youth in Action Award. She was recognized for her commitment to supporting heart patients.

Dugger is a member of the Lakewood 4-H Club in Pittsburg County. She created her nonprofit, Art for Hearts, to raise funds by auctioning pieces of art donated by Oklahoma artists. Proceeds from the project help patients at the Saint Francis Heart Hospital with medical needs. A heart patient herself, Dugger aims to raise awareness and funds to support those with heart problems. She also serves as a leader on her tribe’s reservation, honoring her heritage and focusing on meeting needs in her community.

Greg OwenOklahoma State University Extension 4-H educator in Pittsburg County, said he has watched Dugger work diligently to achieve her goals.

“We are so proud of Jenessa for being selected as one of only 12 National Youth in Action runners-up, as well as her accomplishments while serving as president of the state leadership council for 2022-2023,” Owen said. “She has an outstanding service project and is a wonderful example of 4-H in Pittsburg County and the Oklahoma 4-H Youth Development program.”

Elimination of Advanced Pricing for Class I and II Milk Necessary to Modernize Marketing Orders

American Farm Bureau Federation Chief Economist Roger Cryan presented the testimony below on behalf of AFBF and its membership at the ongoing Federal Milk Marketing Order Pricing Formula hearing.

The testimony focuses on removing Class I and Class II milk from the advanced pricing formula used by dairy processors when calculating the price paid to farmers for their milk. Class I milk is used for beverages while Class II milk is used for foods like ice cream, cottage cheese and sour cream.

According to AFBF data presented at the hearing, advanced pricing has disrupted the orderly marketing of milk and led to unfair marketing conditions for dairy farmers. This disruption is caused when the price of other classes of milk rises above the announced advanced price of Class I and Class II milk. A full explanation of advanced pricing is available via Market Intel.

AFBF has previously testified on adding 640-pound cheddar cheese blocks and unsalted butter to the price survey used in Class price calculations, in support of member policy to include more products in the price calculations. AFBF also supports several proposals by the National Milk Producers Federation, which would increase Class I prices, drop barrel cheese from the Class III price formula, and return to the “higher-of” Class I formula.

Boxed Beef Report

OKC West in El Reno had 5,653 head of cattle on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.

USDA Market News reports- "Compared to last week: Feeder steers sold 3.00-7.00 lower. Feeder heifers traded 8.00-12.00 lower. Sharp declines on both the CME Feeder and Live cattle contracts has made for moderate to light demand on feeders. Weaned steer and heifer calves sold 3.00-6.00 higher. Demand good for calves as rain is in the forecast early in the week. Quality plain to average few attractive, several un-weaned calves on offer again this week."

Meanwhile- OKC West Manager Bill Barnhart offers his weekly commentary via the market's Facebook page- "We had more calves than feeder weight yearlings at the auction this week for the 1st time since late last fall. Yearling supplies are drying up not only in numbers but quality. Feeder buyers had few to pick from with enough age. Calves on the other hand are coming to town, mostly unweaned this early. With wheat pasture emerging around the trade area and rain in the forecast the calf market was steady to stronger. Feeder cattle Wednesday were sharply lower. The feeder futures have lost 10.00-12.00 in the last 2 weeks. Live Cattle 5.00 lower on the board over the same period moving below the 50 day moving averages. The cash feeder market lost 5.00-10.00 on most classes. Fats traded 1.00 lower last week and early trade this week is another 1.00 lower."
