Dr. Kim Anderson Sees a Bottom in Sight for Wheat Market

Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Intern, Maci Carter, had the chance to catch up with Oklahoma State University Extension grain marketing economist, Dr. Kim Anderson and talk about the latest WASDE report, the grain markets, and more.

As grain stocks are tight, Anderson said, and there were not too many changes in this WASDE report’s numbers- especially U.S. wheat.

“They did increase the projected ending stocks,” Anderson said. “That should have had a negative impact on price, but in the world wheat situation, they kept those stocks relatively tight and actually lowered them a little bit, so wheat stocks are tight, they remain tight, and we saw wheat prices increase today after the report.”

Anderson said hard red winter wheat prices increased by about seven or eight cents following the report.

Regarding corn and soybeans, Anderson said there is potential for some production changes, but wheat is pretty much in the bin now.

“Looking down the road, stocks are tight with wheat,” Anderson said. “On corn, we have got above average U.S. stocks of corn, and soybean stocks are tight.”

Livestock Risk Services Helping Producers Take Advantage of LRP

In this episode of Beef Buzz, I am talking with Dakota Moss of Livestock Risk Services about Livestock Risk Protection for cattle producers. Livestock Risk Services has recently been added to the National Family of livestock-related businesses.

Livestock Risk Protection is a nationwide price protection offered by USDA, Moss said, and is built for any size of operation.

“It is basically ensuring against the market on any number of head from one calf all the way to 12,000 head,” Moss said.

LRP can be a useful tool for producers, Moss said, whether they are locking in a margin on their stockers, or if they are a cow-calf producer looking at ensuring high prices.

“Especially with the political environment we are in, we have more uncertainty nowadays than we ever have before, so having that plan in place and protecting the marketing plan and the business plan at the LRP- there is an incredible opportunity to capture with that program right now,” Moss said.

Federal Budget Woes Delay New Farm Bill Progress

The 2018 Farm Bill expired on Sept. 30, 2023, as government officials focused on passing a 45-day continuation of the federal budget.

Amy Hagerman, an associate professor of agricultural economics and Oklahoma State University Extension agricultural policy specialist, said the expiration will have limited impact in the short term but could have long-term impacts without a continuation.

Without a continuation or resolution of the Farm Bill, some commodity programs, for example, would revert to outdated legislation created in the 1930s and 1940s, Hagerman said. However, the Farm Bill has some longevity outside of its official expiration. Certain programs that operate on calendar or crop years designated for official reporting will continue through the end of 2023 and into 2024.

“I expect we’ll see a lot of conversation around the budget in the coming weeks,” Hagerman said. “That’s really important for the Farm Bill as well, because the budget determines the money for some of those programs (operating under the 2018 Farm Bill) and for USDA offices to administer the programs.”

Jim Meek Elected as Chair of Oklahoma Broadband Governing Board

Oklahoma Farm Bureau Treasurer and District 9 Director Jim Meek was recently elected to serve as chair of the Oklahoma Broadband Governing Board at the group’s regular meeting Tuesday, Oct. 10.

The Okmulgee County rancher was elected by unanimous vote after having served as vice chair since the governing board’s inception in 2022, when he was appointed to the board by Oklahoma House Speaker Charles McCall.

Meek and newly elected vice chair Amanda Mullins will lead the charge in the effort to expand access to reliable, affordable high-speed internet service in the state of Oklahoma.

“The future of rural Oklahoma depends heavily on access to quality and affordable broadband service,” Meek said. “Not only is agriculture becoming more dependent on technology, but many vital community resources, including medical services, financial transactions and educational opportunities rely on broadband availability to deliver their services to Oklahomans.”

HPAI Infections Now in Three States- State Vet Dr. Rod Hall Offers Bio-Security Advice

Health officials have euthanized a Minnesota commercial turkey flock after tests confirmed it was positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza. The flock contained approximately 140,000 birds and is the state’s first confirmed case of the disease since last spring. As is typically the case during spring or fall, officials say the disease is likely connected to the seasonal migration of wild birds. Commercial flocks in South Dakota and Utah have also tested positive for the virus. Michael Crusan, spokesman for the Minnesota Board of Animal Health, says now is the time for producers to keep up with biosecurity measures and keep the area around their animals clean.

Last year, HPAI cost America’s poultry producers almost 59 million birds in 47 states.

Here in Oklahoma- Dr. Rod Hall worries that wild birds could airlift HPAI into the state. According to comments from our State Vet- "Please be aware that cases of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza are beginning to occur in commercial and back yard flocks of poultry as the southward fall migration of wild waterfowl gets underway. The virus continues to be a serious threat to poultry, causing high mortality in all domestic poultry species."

If you have poultry, please institute as much biosecurity as possible. This includes keeping poultry as far away from places wild waterfowl gather as possible, preventing wild waterfowl from coming near domestic poultry, not visiting other premises with poultry, not bringing new poultry to their premises, and changing clothes after being in areas where wild waterfowl or other poultry have been before caring for domestic poultry.

Please report unusual illnesses or deaths in poultry to Animal Industry Services of Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry at 405-522-6141

Boxed Beef Report

Oklahoma National Stockyards  had 7,145 head on the yards as of 9 PM Sunday evening.. The sale will start this morning at 6:30 a.m. We are expecting to start with 7,200 -7,700.

Last Monday on October 9th- Compared to the previous week- Feeder steers and heifers mostly steady but those over 800 lbs. not well tested. Weaned steer calves 2.00-3.00 higher; un-weaned or short weaned steers 3.00-6.00 lower. Heifer calves steady to 5.00 lower. Demand good for feeders and long weaned cattle; moderate for others. Cattle futures lower again today despite the light numbers of available feeders. Speculators are pointing to outside influences for reasons to the lower cattle futures today. Quality mostly average.
